Vpn into home network to access network share?

VPN is an OK alternative is you are going to use UPNP to view video or listen to MP3s. SMB is NOT meant to be used over WAN and you will never get it to work well. This means that you will not be able to add the VPN sources to your library as UPNP address constantly change and the library can not build a database properly.

You have ONE option that I know of that will work for you and thats FTP. You will need to setup and FTP server and a DDNS address if you have a dynamic IP (you more then likely do)

You could use the VPN to access the FTP and skip the DDNS, this is more secure but may introduce a little bit more latency.

After you setup your FTP server you will need to do some hacking to the Boxee Box to get it to see your FTP. You can follow the tutorial I wrote to see how.
