Default Movies on NAS drive - UPNP or SMB

I have a few movies in xvid format on a NAS drive. I can install a UPNP server like mediatomb or i can share them as a SMB share. Does boxee have any preferences or benefits one way or the other when it comes to accessing media? Would SMB have faster speed compared to UPNP?

As far as I know, Boxee doesn't do UPNP, either as a client or server. XBMC has a UPNP server portion, but I have heard it isn't very well supported and I don't believe it is exposed by Boxee in any case.

So SMB is the way to go.

i beleive boxee can act as a UPNP client. I can see my server appear under the add sources option, but i didnt try to set it up to see how it works.

Yeah, it looks like you are right, in that XBMC has both a UPnP client & server:

I have a ReadyNAS with many vids and SMB works well with me, UPnP would add another service to the NAS so I've stuck with SMB.

    Default Dumb-ass question (?)

Sorry guys but I found this thread while trying to find why Boxee gives an error msg when I go try try and play a file on my NAS. I have just got a Macbook a couple of days back and have loaded Boxee and am testing it there (I am also intending to get an Apple TV and load it there, but though I would test out functionality first on Macbook).

I can see my NAS drives/folders OK, but as soon as I try to navigate to folder swhere AVI files are I get download error (or is it access error ?) msg.

Perhaps this is obvious to anyone who has travelled this road before .. but not to a neophyte ... appreciate any guidance

    Tks

Strange, not seen this before. My aTv finds all the AVI files even when they are in zip files. I take it you have no problem accessing the files via OSX?

Is Boxee indexing the files? Do you see them appear on the Recently Added section on the home screen? Have you added the drive as a source ?
