Found this on the XBMC forums, and it friggin' worked.

Go to the Windows 7 "Uninstall a program" control panel and uninstall "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant"
Reboot.
Magic (for me at least).

I can confirm this works. I have no idea why, but it does.
I was running Windows Live Essentials 2011 or whatever. You can't remove JUST the sign-in assistant anymore. You have to remove the entire Windows Live suite now. Ugh.
This is actually a samba bug, therefore, a bug that the boxee team will need to implement into their software on the boxee box.

I really hope this fix happens fast. I can't even use Windows Live Messenger on my computer right now, and I can't find any type of fix :-/ Is the only fix available on boxee's end? I hope this one is implemented soon..
I was able to sign on without removing anything. Just took using the ip of the server and going the manual/advanced route.
i was looking at this issue today - surprised that using the ip instead of the netbios name helps as the problem is in credential negotiation.
yes, this is definitely on the radar and we realize it's inconvenient for users who are removing WLE. would love to know if more people can get this working with the above workaround.
thanks,

Hey Dan,
Just wanted to thank you for acknowledging the presence of the error and that there is work being done on fixing it. I appreciate how active you guys are with the community, and it's the great support you guys offer that is why I'm sticking it out and not returning the box to the store
Thanks again.
Simply creating the boxee Boxa user on my win7 box fixed this. Using the normal admin or user assigned to a profile on it didn't work. I also added the boxee user to the security page a gave full control - no prob here.
I'm among those having issues with the Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant (and I say "Assistant" very loosely) and the oft-cited IP address workaround doesn't seem to do it for me. Uninstalling the program from my PC was my workaround, but it keeps on getting reinstalled as a required component of the latest Games for Windows update. I can either choose to play Dawn of War II or be able to stream to my ATV. From what I've read, there are fixes in the latest builds of Samba that address this; they just need to be incorporated into a newer build of Boxee for ATV.
As an aside, XBMC is having the exact same problems on a variety of non-Windows platforms. Apparently they bundle their own SMB client with the software, so it's not like you can try to force in an update to fix it. Given the shared lineage, I imagine that's more than related.
I found a better work-around. This allows you to keep the Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant and still access your shares.
1) On your PC, add any folders you want accessible to the appropriate Library.
2) On your PC, open up Media Streaming Options and make sure it's turned on. Make sure that 'Media programs on this PC and remote connections' is set to Allowed.
3) In Boxee, go to Add Source. Choose Browse and scroll down to uPnP devices. Viola, you will now see your PC listed. (It sometimes takes a couple of seconds to pop up.) To add the specific folder you want, pick the content type (Music, Pictures, Videos), then Folders, then the folder itself.
