    Default Network Sources Disconnecting

    Hi,

I am experiencing what I believe is this issue (network sources becoming disconnected):

    http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-4850

running boxee on an acer aspire revo, Win XP Pro. I downloaded boxee 3 days ago, so whatever version that would be.

I have my machine set to never sleep, so I think this might actually be an issue with either:

    1. boxee sleeping (ie, when the boxee screensaver starts).

    OR

    2. the machines hosting the shares going to sleep, or else turning off and then back on again. Eg, I have an external drive on my network that I've added as a network source to boxee. If I turn it off, and then back on again, boxee loses it. I have to restart boxee, or sometimes even restart windows and navigate to it using explorer, and then restart boxee, to get it back.

Is there any way to get this working more smoothly?

    Thanks,
    Jonah

Have you tried mapping your shares as a network drive(s) in Windows XP on your Revo?

I can tell you for sure that it's not Boxee "sleeping". It doesn't really stop operating in any significant capacity when the screensaver activates. The screensaver exists purely to, well, save screens.

How are you connecting to your shares within Boxee? Do you have them simply saved as shortcuts? Do you have your SMB user name and password set in Boxee or do your shares simply not require a login/pass to access on the local network?

    Need more info.

Also: have you thought about using Win 7 instead of XP? I'd think the lack of acceleration alone would be a killer under XP on a Revo. Perhaps the issue wouldn't manifest under a newer OS. I dunno.

If the Boxee machine never sleeps but the system with shares that Boxee does sleep then yes, Boxee will lose track of those share.

However, if everything is up all the time (like on my network) and you have this problem it's probably related to this issue: http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-5751

which was fixed but didn't make it into the last release. Should definitely make into the next one (I hope!)

yes, it is the other machines that are sleeping or getting turned off and then on again. Will prospero's suggestion of making the shares mapped network drives fix this problem?

One of them I've just been accessing them directly through the Files browsing feature within boxee. The other one (which connects to a win7 machine) requires a username and password, so I had to save it as a source within boxee.

I may upgrade at some point, but winXP works just fine for my purposes, I'm not playing anything super high def. Although flash content is choppy.....

I'm not sure what else you're looking for. Have you tried mapping the shared drives as network drives? If so, does that work any better?

Otherwise, I think your issue is related to either currently outstanding bugs in Boxee or a bug that has been fixed and will most likely show up in the next release...
