Default Is it possible to use an Apple Remote with Boxee on non-Apple hardware?

Has anyone had any luck getting an Apple remote to work with Boxee on non-Apple hardware?

I have an old netbook that I have turned into a surprisingly capable Boxee machine using an Ubuntu USB live image, and I have a couple of Apple remotes that I never use which I would love to be able to use with it.

I've been playing around with lirc by cannot get it to recognise the Apple remote through a USB IrDA interface (although it recognises the interface).

Does the Apple remote only work with Apple IR receivers?

I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious, and I'll keep trying, but I don't want to waste a load of time trying to get it to work if the Apple Remote requires a Apple IR receiver hardware.

I really don't know, but maybe I can help out a little. What happens when you run irw to test the remote?

I have the same problem and I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Remote
The Apple Remote uses an NEC IR protocol which consists of a differential PPM encoding on a 1:3 duty cycle 38kHz 950 nm infrared carrier
Most IR-receiver only recognise IR signals below 950nm. While search for an working IR-receiver I found this: http://twistedmelon.com/mira/hardware.html

Or you could build an IR-receiver yourself: http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?htt..._receiver.html

I don't know if anything of that works with Lirc/WinLIRC but thats what I would try.

I would really like an answer on this too!

Will be assembling my new IONITX-based Boxee HTPC (with Ubuntu) soon, and have the aluminum Apple Remote which I HAVE to get working with Ubuntu+Boxee..

Haven't found a LIRC USB IR receiver that "understands" the Apple Remote yet

Came across that thread too, but just skipped by.. But it looks like it could work! Unfortunately, they're out of stock, so I can't test it atm..

However, I noticed that LIRC supports MCE certified receivers, and the HP USB MCE IR receiver should apparently support the Apple Remote. Bought it from eBay, so now I'm gonna test it (when it arrives in 10 days - it's shipped from HK). It's the 3rd receiver I have bought, so I cross my fingers and hope this one will work!

Will keep you updated when I have tested it

I believe the IR receiver in a Mac Mini is USB-based. You could, conceivably, buy the spare part and rig it up inside a PC case. There are drivers out there for it. Then you'd be using an Apple remote to speak to actual Apple receiver hardware into a Windows box. Not plug-and-play but not brain surgery either.
