PS3 Has Been Hacked!

There's finally a full mod for the ps3 coming out which will allow the obvious, but in relation to us it will allow full homebrew access finally!

Meaning we could see a port of boxee for ps3 whether Sony likes it or not!!!! Lol

But seriously I think this would be huge as the ps3 is a $300, small, quiet, and very powerful device that can obviously handle 1080p without breaking a sweat. The possibilities are endless here.

$300 + ~$150 for the mod chip.

That gets you a system with 256MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, and no REAL operating system. Additionally, a modchip like this guarantees you'll lose PSN access within a week.

I love the Playstation 3, but as far as I can see it will never be a sensible choice for running Boxee unless it's going to do so natively and officially.

Nothing in that article suggests that you will be able to run homebrew (your own programs) either.

Also it uses Powerpc architecture. There's no boxee support for that. One of the many, many reasons it won't happen.

True, the article does not specifically say that you can run home brew, but the article fails to mention most details about this hack.

This mod is super easy to install. You don't have to open your console so your seals stay intact. The mod allows you to run unsigned code (aka homebrew). As a matter of fact the backup manager software that allows you to backup games to your HDD and play them from there is homebrew.

Watch this.

I'm really excited by this. Every major current generation console is hacked. I have a Wii with almost 172 games, a Xbox 360 with 57 games, and now I gotta get me a PS3, and I don't really play that much!

Modding consoles became useless the day consoles started banning from their networks. I'd much rather have PSN access than running some homebrewed applications... even if backing up games on the HDD sounds tempting, it's not worth the risk of losing network content.

That's not to mention the fact that these consoles update their firmware all of the time. They'll patch whatever the jailbreak is bypassing and everything you have will be broken until the hackers update their software which of course will be patched again. Do you really want to have your stuff broken every other week and wait around for updates?

uhhh......it says in the one and only post at the bottom of the page that Sony has already put out a firmware upgrade that prevents this one from working.
