Thread: Boxee suddenly unstable

    Default Boxee suddenly unstable

I have been using Boxee for the past several releases without many issues until about mid last week. Now Boxee doesn't seem to want to stay stable. It has crashed several times in various places. Sometimes it crashes in the middle of a show, sometimes when changing menus, and other times it just stops responding. The only time it seems to consistently crash is when I try to exit Boxee.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it has something to do with Windows rather than Boxee, but I am not able to isolate the problem.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Boxee Logs attached.

Well, the problem is that it could be just about anything. We need more details.

First thing I would do is run a couple of passes with a memory testing program. The Microsoft memory test that is (I believe) built into Windows 7 bootable DVDs is ok and memtest86 is popular. Random program crashes are often caused by failing RAM.

What form does the crashing take? Is it ONLY Boxee that is crashing? Does it just crash to the desktop? Does the computer restart itself? Do you get a blue screen? Do you get any error messages?

Please be as specific as you can be.

Thank you. Exactly what we needed to ask.

He thinks it's his windows install already...so more info is needed for sure.

@nomad64 please can you try renaming your userdata under C:\Users\[username]\appdata\Roaming\BOXEE\ and then post debug logs when it crashes

    Thanks for the replies!

I know my first post was pretty vague, and I apologize for that. I will try to answer the questions to the best of my abilities and will be happy to provide additional details.

    Run a memory testing program!
Did that shortly after posting (memtest86+) since I had the CD handy. Ran it for about an hour and a half, and it didn't run into any errors.

Is BOXEE the only thing that is crashing/having issues?
From what I have tested, yes. I have streamed TV episodes using Hulu/Firefox and used Media Player Classic to play some videos from the same (SMB) repository Boxee uses without any crashes or random error messages.

    Crash specifics please...
Only BOXEE would crash (no BSOD, or machine reboots), which would drop me to the Windows desktop with a rather (un)helpful Windows wizard trying to resolve the problem (which allowed me to kill the process). Sometimes BOXEE would just freeze, and I would have to force kill it via Task Manager. It hasn't appeared to make the OS or any other programs unstable.

    Anything else interesting?
After clearing out a bunch of old TV episodes I had seen, the crashes seemed to be less frequent. IMO the crashes seem to be at their most frequent after I add in the repository for BOXEE to scan. Not sure if that has anything to do with it...but before I cleared out my repository, it had over 350 items.

    How about some logs, yes?
The logs I attached earlier were the regular logs...this post contains the debug logs after renaming my userdata folder. Since I can't attach the zipped logs due to file size, here is a link to download them: http://btc.servegame.org/boxee_log.zip
boxee_first_crash.log - Crash after adding in my repository and letting it scan for a while. Clicked on "TV Shows" and it crashed.
boxee_crash_during_playback.log - Crash while streaming a TV episode from my media repository. I believe it happened about 5 minutes into play.
boxee_crash_when_exiting.log - After previous crash, I opened then exited BOXEE, and it crashed.

Let me know if you need any additional information!

    Thanks,

    Default Same Issue

Interestingly, I have the exact same problem...down to the "T".

No memory errors, only happens w/ Boxee...sometimes have to kill it with task manager (hangs). Tried uninstalling/reinstalling...no luck.

    Win7 Home Premium 64-bit
    AMD Phenom Quad 1.8Ghz
    4GB RAM

This machine is only used for Boxee/Media content...

Here is the log I have...no debug log found
