Default New to Boxee, looking for inexpensive, no frills remote...

A few questions. Are there inexpensive PC remotes out there that work with Boxee? Any suggestions? Do they work out of the box, e.g. no software hacking or modifications required? All I need is something equiv. to the Apple Remote. Just looking for the necessary basic functions.

On another note, would it be as simple or even easier to get an IR receiver and use my home theater remote?

For a PC, any MCE remote / IR receiver *pair* should work as Boxee is MCE compatible and would be the simplest and probably cheapest route.

You have to be careful when trying to mix and match "MCE" remotes with any IR receiver because not all MCE remotes use the same IR codes. Without knowing what your home theater remote brand/model, it's hard to say if it would be easier to go that route.

Okay. Searcing for MCE remotes on Amazon, Newegg or eBay returns a few different kinds. Will any do, as long as it comes with said receiver? What about using a "Windows 7 certified remote" with Windows XP (or vice versa)?

As for home theater remotes, I have a few, all from the past two years. Yamaha and Toshiba mainly.

    Default Remotes

If you are using an XP box don't get a Vista/Win 7 compatible MCE remote it WILL NOT WORK!!! I took an extremely irritating trip down that road! There are a bunch of replacement drivers out there that say will fix the issue but I was only able to get the receiver to work, the remote was still useless. No clue about using an older MCE remote on a Vista/Win 7 box... I would think it would work fine.

Currently I'm using a Win 7 box and my smart phone as a remote and it works great!

My personal recommendation would be the Lenovo N5901 - it works with any OS - uses RF not IR and has tons of controllable features - and it's 'out of the box' useable - and it uses a track-ball in place of a mouse

The only problem is the price -- it's $60 at full list -- unless you can find a coupon code which frequently gets it in the $30 to $36 price range, shipped - but it's not back-lite for dark usage environments - I rigged a very small and inexpensive LED, battery powered lite to fix this problem

Other than that, I think it's the perfect Multi-Media remote - at least for me
