Default MKV with subs crashes Boxee

I have a bunch of MKVs with subtitles and playing any of them causes Boxee to instantly crash to Finder. I did some searching around the forums and discovered that there was an issue on the Windows side with MKV files using SSA subtitles. I stripped all the subs out of the MKVs using mkvtoolnix and now they play fine.

I just wanted to make people aware that this still appears to be an issue, at least on the Mac side.

I'm on one of the new Mac Minis (Snow Leopard, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, GeForce 320M) and I'm running the latest Boxee downloaded from the main site.

If you can reproduce this on the mac version you are using please post your crashreporter and boxee logs.

we will be releasing a new version soon please try again with that version and see if it helps

Here's my latest log and several CrashReporter files. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Later this evening, I should be trying out another MKV, this one with non-SSA subtitles in it. I'll post here with results.

EDIT: Just tested this other MKV file. 1080p with like 20 different subtitle languages (none were SSA). No problems at all.

I have this same problem. I usually use CCCP and either windows media player or MPC to play my anime. I only use boxee for movies and tv shows.

But anyway it seems like if the anime uses a custom font- boxee can't render it. Is that whats causing it to crash?

I've noticed this on one other movie. I couldn't fix it so I had to de-mux it and remove the sub titles and it worked. That was for A Clockwork Orange.

But I can't do this for my anime because they're all fansubs and I kinda need the subtitles in order for me to understand it.

Can someone tell me how to fix it?

    EDIT:

I should also note searching the forum for "MKV subtitles crash" turns up other threads with people having the same issue. I get this issue for pretty much any fansub. Boxee can't seem to index them like XBMC which can use a different scrapper for anime.

Anyway as an example any fansub by horrible subs: http://www.animetake.com/seikimatsu-...in-episode-13/

...crashes boxee on any platform I'm sure. I happen to be on windows 7 64bit though.

I think if your subs are not SSA, then they should play fine. On my MKVs, only the non-English subs were SSA. If you remove only the SSA subs, you should be able to view the file.

If they're all SSA, then I think you may be screwed . If there are any converters out there that can take MKV subs and save them out as SRT or SMI, then you might be in luck. Export the subs as external files and then remove them from the MKV. I don't know if such software exists, though.

    Good luck!

Opened up 3 diff anime just now and they all use "ASS" subtitles.

So boxee can't play those kinds of subs & XBMC can?
