Thumbs up NVIDIA Ion 2 Now Reality

Looks like the Nvidia ION-2 is on it's way by summer 2010. Judging by the pics, netbooks and items like the Zotac will see the upgrade! Maybe Revos too???

Acer to be first to release a Acer Aspire One 532G netbook in April 2010.

Up to 10x the video processing power of std notebooks. Nice.

That means Ion 2 should support HDMI out, 1080p Blu-ray and Flash playback, Windows 7 Home Premium, and mainstream gaming out of the box. (Take that, Broadcom Crystal HD.) And unlike Ion numero uno, NVIDIA’s also promising up to 10 hours of battery life on netbooks — thanks to Optimus the system knows when to shut off the discrete GPU when not in use to save power.

Haven't seen any pricing other than engadget so i'm not sure if it is legit.

Engadget has updated their post with pricing info from Zotac.

Supposedly, the barebones version will be $209.00

This is without HD, RAM or OS.

I've already got Win7 licenses and spare 2.5" SATA hard drives, so all I will have to add is RAM - should be able to get an ION2 nettop for an additional $250ish out of pocket.

I was about to pull the trigger on a Zotac MAG or Revo 3610, but I'll wait now.

    No word on availability yet.

Hmmmm. I'm still don't think I would go this route unless you absolutely need that tiny footprint or you happen to have Laptop spare parts lying around. I rather go with a mini itx board ( when they come out) and put faster/cheaper/larger desktop memory, hard drive and have the ability to add a slimline DVD drive. If the pc is going fit in a cabinet under the tv anyway a couple of inches will not matter.

I originally just wanted a small system that networked off my main computer but there has been several times the main computer was off or asleep and I had to get off my couch to turn it on. No good. I want as close as a dedicated settop box as I can get so wife and kids are not "confused" why it is not working now . Plus in the long haul it will be cheaper for electricity cost. The unit will be faster also will higher quality ram and hard drive.

The zotac will definately fill a niche for somebody.

Agreed with you on most points, but I think the niche is a pretty good size for somethign with this capability.

I will have a main PC in the living room with a Ceton 4-tuner card running Win7MCE/boxee - that is a uATX 775 motherboard with an Celeron E3300, 4GB and a Blu-Ray reader. It will be on 24/7/365 - just like the two tivos it (and a Zotac Ion2 box) will be replacing.

This Ion2 box will be vesa mounted to the back of the 32" LCD display in the bedroom. I don't envision needing an optical drive, I do have space laptop parts around. I'll run a USB MCE remove receiver out to a point where it will be visible, but otherwise, the box will be behind the TV.

I'm perfectly fine with this box being tiny and low cost - it just needs to be able to run Win7MCE/Boxee and play back at least 720p HD. I know that the current Zotac MAG fits those requirements and that is why I was about to buy it before the news of these Ion2 nettops started arriving. But I don't need it right now (at least until the Ceton card ships) so I might as well wait and spend a little less since I have the spare laptop parts around.

    Just my 2cents:

I run Windows Home Server (WHS) as centralized storage. It runs 24/7 in the basement. All the Revos connect to it and get content whenever called upon. I do run an add-in called Lights Out on the WHS that shuts it down between midnight and 6am each day, so power is conserved that way. It can also be configed to wake if a network PC is active. Pretty cool.

The zotac 330 is the same as the revo 3610, it just does not come with an OS. Which is what turned me off about them given the price point is higher for nothing better or more.

This little notebook job is pretty neat, but still too soon to see what the real deal is. Little leery of a mini laptop myself too from a hardware updating and such. Need to see what comes out between now and mid April.
