Default call to arms! component video output on dlink boxee!

    Avner,
The entire AV industry is waiting for the dlink/boxee device to be released. We are ready to to sell the dlink boxee device to our customers. Here are some concerns we have:

    * You should support 1080i/p component video output… by not offering component video ports and forcing us to use HDMI we cannot integrate the box into AV matrix systems! The reason is because HDMI is very problematic. It works very poorly compared to the tried and true component video

    * Look at apple tv, roku, vudu, your cable box, and every other box in your entertainment center. They all have component video output! Roku is taking a big gamble. Think of the tens of millions of TVs around the world that DO have component video capability but do NOT have HDMI….

    * Think of the tens of millions of people that are going to buy the dlink boxee and then go return it for a refunc because HDMI did not synch up…. or they did not have HDMI port on their TV! What a nightmare for your company.

    * Who is advising you on this video output issue? You should consult with somebody experienced in the industry… your company is really reducing the target audience greatly.

    * There are tons of great chipsets on the market that output component video.

Kindly respond to his issue. Thanks!

General community, voice your concerns to the boxee team so they can do this the right way!

May I suggest you address this letter to Steven Joe, CEO of D-Link?

You've got a good point -- there are many, many people with component TV's who would love to get their hands on a BBox, but will have technical difficulties doing so. But, I'm not confident that Boxee has 100% control over the hardware, and that D-Link is calling many of the shots.

Omph -- That's like asking for President Obama's personal phone number... I don't know it.

    You could try:

D-Link U.S.A., Canadian, and Latin American headquarters are located at 17595 Mt. Herrmann, Fountain Valley, CA, 92708. Phone (800) 326-1688 or (714) 885-6000; FAX (866) 743-4610; Internet http://www.dlink.com.

The law you mentioned applies to only certain content such as devices that play Bluray Disc or other protected content! If users want to play HD home movies or any other content that is not AACS protected then it is perfectly legal.

Component video is not illegal! Boxee can downres any AACS content to 480i easily. Consumers who own HDTV with HDMI ports can watch it at full 1080p... users without HDMI ports will have to be happy watching it at 480i.

You do realize that all the bluray players coming out next year and for many years after will still have standard resolution analog output don't you?

...any Licensed Player manufactured after December 31, 2010 shall limit analog video outputs for Decrypted AACS Content to SD Interlace Modes

You make valid points but from a hardware manufacturers point of view, the less types of hardware they have to support the better. Why dump money into a supporting a standard anymore that's rapidly fading?

At some point you have to draw a line in the sand. It all comes down to money.

Support costs would be much less with component video than HDMI... HDMI "just doesn't work".
