Default Airfoil like function to stream audio to airport express speakers

Currently, I use Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba on my macbook pro to stream audio from any application such as safari or quicktime player to speakers attached to airport expresses around the house. I would ask that such a capability be added to the aTV Boxee as well.

That would truly be great. Just thought about that yesterday when trying to figure out how to get good music into my kitchen

Love the idea. I use Airport Expresses all over my house as well for audio streaming.

Unfortunately, Airfoil is not open source so this isn't something Boxee could easily integrate.

Well, it doesn't have to be airfoil. Somehow apple updated the sound driver in the aTV firmware update 2.3 to allow aTV to stream via airtunes through airport express connected speakers. Maybe someone might figure out how to do the same through Boxee as well.

Arrow Info about the AirTunes Protocol

Based on a little research, it seems that it would be possible to create a way to hook into AirTunes capable devices for audio playback.

Apple uses something called RAOP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAOP ) or Remote Audio Output Protocol and broadcasts this over Bonjour ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software) ) across the network.

    http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1312.html

If Boxee were to be aware of Bonjour services, then in theory we could use something like this open source library to setup the streaming to an AirTunes capable station.

    http://raop-play.sourceforge.net/

Since Bonjour can be installed on all platforms (that's to Apple's software update software / Zeronconf on Linux) that part shouldn't be too difficult. In fact, for the Mac clients of Boxee, you might just be able to tie into existing libraries already installed in OS X.

In any event, this is all just speculation. I'll keep thinking about it and maybe put my computer science degree to good use and give the Boxee kids a hand with this ;-)

Or probably use something along these lines for the Bonjour stuff.

Lightbulb PulseAudio using AirPort Express as audio sink (AirTunes streamer)

I think that easiest would be if it was added to PulseAudio first (and then Boxee added PulseAudio output support), see:

    and

My family uses airtunes and airport expresses to stream music through out our house and back porch. Its one one of the main reasons for purchasing a mac mini to be used as our htpc. My wife will let me do what i want but she will not allow wires all over the house. If we can not use airtunes with boxee then i suspect we will eventually stop using it. For this same reason we do not use Frontrow at all. This is a shame, I was excited about the possibilities of netfix and of course hulu. Please consider some type of airtunes solution.
