I am running Ubuntu 8.04 with boxee alpha. The Beta version is not available on 8.04.
I use 8.04 because it is LTS and now I can't upgrade to Beta.
What will be the problems with installing on 8.04?

8.04 is reaching the end of its LTS period and will stop being supported by Ubuntu with the next LTS release, 10.04, in April. It might be time to consider upgrading to at least the current LTS release, 9.04.

That's not the way LTS works. I was in the same boat as thomlark and made the same request, but in the end I had to update to the latest non-LTS ubuntu, despite the fact that an LTS release makes the perfect sense for a HTPC used by non-geek members of the family.
LTS releases come out every three years. So 8.04 is the only LTS release until April 2011. Neither 9.04 nor 10.04 are/will be LTS releases.

I may have been incorrect about 9.04 being LTS (I could have sworn it was), but I am not about 8.04 support dropping when 10.04, which is a LTS release, comes out:
The two LTS releases so far are DapperDrake and HardyHeron. The next LTS release will be LucidLynx, released in April 2010.
Point releases will cease once Ubuntu 10.04 is released. (at the bottom of the page)
Basically, 8.04 will be entering "extended support" (kind of like Windows XP), where it will only get security and bugfixes but no app updates, after April.

I guess I will have to either wait for 10.4 which should be LTS according to Ubuntu website or go ahead upgrade in a series of steps from 8.04 to 9.10.
I noted that jtv has upgraded. How did it go? Were there probems?
With limited resources, the Boxee-Linux team can only do so much. I think there were technically reasons for why they stopped supporting 8.04 and while it does suck (as I was in that same boat), the only thing that can be done is to update Ubuntu.
Keep in mind too that there is a ton of fundamental things that got changed with the Alpha and Beta and once things get more stable, hopefully Boxee will be able to support LTS better.
