Did you register your device/account at boxee.tv for developing and got the registration file copied to the folder. This is essential to get it working.

Thanks, the talk about MAC addresses on that thread made me clue in to the fact that the box has two MAC addresses. Having only skimmed the instructions when registering my device (the forms were self explanatory, I thought) and taking the short-cut of copying the MAC from my wireless router's config page, my dev certificate was clearly incorrect. It works fine now.
