Default HOW TO: Access mature Hulu content on Boxee Beta (Mac+Windows+Linux)

In its current build, Boxee Beta users are unable to watch mature Hulu content, since Hulu.com requires users to log-in before seeing mature videos. But thanks to a little trickery devised by jaaps, posted on this thread, Boxee users can now watch mature Hulu content with a bit of file editing.

**This is not officially recognized by Boxee, Firefox, or their developers.**

    Setup
    Firefox
    • Ensure Firefox is set-up to accept cookies.
    • Visit hulu.com and create a user account.
    • View a mature content video (example: 30 Days of Night).
    • Close Firefox

    File Editing

Here's the trick: Boxee uses a similar cookie system as Firefox. By "tricking" Boxee into using your firefox cookies, you can now automatically log into your user account on Hulu.com and watch mature content.

    Locate your Firefox cookies.sqlite file
    • OSX: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/[username]/cookies.sqlite
    • Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/[username].default/cookies.sqlite
    • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[username]\cookies.sqlite
    • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\[username]\appdata\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\cookies. sqlite

Copy this file and paste your Firefox cookies.sqlite into your Boxee cookie directory. You'll be replacing your old Boxee cookies.sqlite.
    • OSX: ~/Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/Profiles/[username]/browser/cookies.sqlite
    • Linux: ~/.boxee/Userdata/profiles/[username]/browser/cookies.sqlite
    • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Boxee\userdata\Profiles\[username]\browser\cookies.sqlite
    • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\[username]\appdata\Roaming\BOXEE\userdata\profiles\[username]\browser\cookies.sqlite

You'll now be able to view mature Hulu content on Boxee! For some shows, i.e., 30 Days of Night, Hulu might warn you that it's unable to show advertisements. But, this warning prompt was also on Firefox, so I don't think it's a consequence of this modification.

Thanks for clearing things up with this hack. Nice job!

Can you elaborate what all Boxee uses the cookies.sqlite file for? I'd hate to jack several other things just to get one or two "mature" shows on Hulu...

And I'm sure I can figure out the Win-7 file string to place the cookies.sqlite, but can you update your post with that info for the masses?

    Yes! Absolutely!

The cookies.sqlite file is where Boxee and Firefox store all your cookie data. So, for example, when your browser automatically log into Gmail, this automated login process is possible because all your log-in data (password, username, etc) is stored in your cookies.sqlite file. In fact, I tried to login to my Gmail account via the Boxee browser, but experienced distortion -- so there's no worry that others can read your email via Boxee.

I don't foresee any negative consequences to this "hack." Boxee stores cookies when you use its browser and when you view network shows on FOX/ABC, but, since Hulu is the only site that I'm aware of that requires a log-in, you're not at risk to lose important data.::knock on wood::

Ok, cool. I just wanted to make sure that overwriting it with the FF version would not jack something else in Boxee. Of course, I'dve saved a backup first just in case.

I'll test it tomorrow afternoon on my 7 and XP machines.

Vista is different... might want to add it to the main post

    Vista FFox
    C:\Users\andyg8180\appdata\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox \Profiles\jq6jiw4s.default

    Vista Boxee
    C:\Users\andyg8180\appdata\Roaming\BOXEE\userdata\ profiles\andyg8180\browser

tadaaaaa... sucked so much trying to figure out the stupid locations of the temp files... Just a note, if you use CCleaner, you mayyyy have to repeat the process...

Man, that is totally bad ass! Works perfectly!

Took like...2 minutes to do. One less reason to use Hulu Desktop!
