Thread: New bluetooth / IR remote

Default New bluetooth / IR remote

    Anyone use this?
    http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/01/b...o-weight-gain/

Click the picture of the remote to be taken to the manufactures homepage

I know it wont win any beauty contests but for its functionality alone it wins points with me.

I am currently using a Playstation 3 for bluerays / upnp - and in the midst of setting up a boxee dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 / windows 7 set-top. (with no blueray drive)

I need to know this remote is a viable solution for controlling boxee in windows and Ubuntu via Bluetooth or via an inexpensive IR dongle.
    Anyone have any experience?
The FAQs on the products homepage state that the item
"only contains the Bluetooth™ profile to control the PS3™."
Yet again, people have gotten the PS3 sony remote to work wonderfully, as far as i understand it.

I intend to do my blueray viewing, and perhaps later my Netflix streaming, on the playstation and want to use the same remote to:

    1. Turn on the and off my TV
    2. Control boxee
    3. turn on and off PS3
    4. control PS3 playback

Any other alternatives? reasonable ones, that is? (under $100 and 100 man hours)

    P.S.
Anyone know if the new beta allows for users to place their courser into a text field via remote (or arrow keys) ?
I ask because i am considering using separate $20 bluetooth keypad should i need to.

Does not mean it has no uses, but someone in the big wide world of remotes has to have paid for and used it. Which seems like no one here has yet.

Like you, I'm in the market too. I'm going to buy whatever seems to get the best votes by actual boxee users.

Use the search option and type in Remotes or MCE Remotes and you get a fair amount of threads with options.

Yours is mentioned here with some other PS3 remotes; http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=11764

Still trying to find the best remote myself. I've got Boxee loaded on Ubuntu 9.04 and would like a bluetooth remote so that there are no extra wires. This would be a good solution to turn on the TV, operate other AV equipment. Did you end up buying this or read any experience using it with Boxee and Ubuntu?

    Thanks!

I keep waiting for Logitech to add PS3 Bluetooth into one of their advanced remote models. I think it is only a matter of time until they do.

I recently bought this remote and it works great for controlling all my electronics and my PS3, the only thing I don't like is you have to turn on each item individually...makes it kind of slow when you wanna watch tv and have to press like 6 buttons just to get it up.

Anywhoseville, I just started using boxee today, technically yesterday...but who's counting?
I thought hey, maybe this remote will work with boxee as well, I've got bluetooth and it'll save me some money from not having to buy a IR dongle. I tried the little guide and program for the official Sony PS3 remote and no luck I've gotten as far as getting windows to recognize the remote and that's it, the buttons don't do anything. Anyone know of a way to manually map the buttons to do what you want? Windows considers the remote as a game controller, I figure there's some way to configure it.
