I'm going to update to 3.0 anyway... Boxee hasn't been usable for me in months anyway.

Same here. Hulu functionality is worthless at the moment and the only other thing I want is Pandora, but I'm not going to type my login with an Apple TV remote every time. Boxee is cool, but they suffer from not-as-good-as-Apple interfaces like everyone else in the world.

Well, the major advantage that Boxee has is being open-sourced with a great community of developers. In the short time I've been around I've seen a lot of improvement. As the project gets nearer to version 1.0 it will get more stable and scale up to a much more mainstream audience. Apple does make nice interfaces but, you are at their mercy for updates and features. One example of this "open source vs. closed source" model that I witnessed recently was with mobile apps. Our company developed both an iPhone and Android app. We submitted the iPhone app to Apple and it took them 3 and a half months to approve it. We submitted the Android app and 10 seconds later it was live in the Market. In my mind, this seemed like the superior way to create an app store. The open source method won hands down. Boxee is still an early alpha. And, yes, it's got bugs. But, with a great community of developers it will only get better. (BTW - I'm not knocking Apple. I use a Mac every day and I use Boxee on my Apple TV. I'm just pointing out that their closed-source, "gated community" approach to development has some disadvantages)

I definitely know the advantages of open source development.. I ran an open source project until I lost interest/free time. But I know the value of a top notch interface, too. Part of it is that Boxee is just kind of slow on Apple TV, which I'm sure is in no small part due to the hardware. If Mac Minis were $300 I'd be all over that.

If I wasn't in the position I am already, Boxee would have a lot more value. But I have an entire library already encoded in h.264 and in iTunes, so the Apple TV software already does almost everything I want. And my internet connection is too slow to take advantage of streaming, but most people have faster internet and that would be a big draw. Once we get the basement finished I have a PC I might repurpose for down there.. Boxee would be perfect.

My appleTV automatically updated even though I had Boxee open. Bummer, now I'm lost without Boxee. Stupid auto-update.

You can disable auto update in the launcher .... I pray right now that that works.
