Default Netflix begins rollout of Mac media player

Is this story possibly good news for Boxee?

Netflix on Monday will begin rolling out its second generation media player that includes support for Intel-based Macs. The company is also adding support for the Firefox Web browser with this release.

Using Microsoft’s Silverlight technology, Netflix’s new media player will allow Mac users to watch movies and TV shows using the company’s “instant watching” feature. The Netflix player will use Microsoft’s Play Ready DRM to protect its content, a feature that wasn't available for Mac users before the release of Silverlight 2.0.

Netflix says the new Silverlight player will only work on Intel-based Macs. According to Netflix data, approximately three-quarters of its Mac subscribers are on Intel-based machines.

Netflix has 12,000 instant watching movies and TV shows available in its catalog.

The company said the rollout of its second generation player would initially be sent to a small amount of subscribers. All Netflix subscribers will get the new player by the end of year.

I guess if there's a way to install SilverLight into Boxee and have Netflix think Boxee is a Firefox browser than we're off to a good start. I'm new to the community but I do have some programming ability and would be more than happy to help out where I can.

I'd also like to see a integration of netflix "watch instantly" option in boxee.

Is there a way to get netflix running on an appletv?

Sure; this is what is great about open source software. You guys can download the source code and plug away! I wonder about getting Silverlight to work as a stand-alone component outside of the browser.

Microsoft Silverlight was chosen for the DRM (thanks to the studios) because Apple wouldn't open their DRM.

I would also like to see a plug-in that takes the movie trailers that boxee shows and a one click "add to queue." This could be mail or on-demand for the future.
