Thread: Web interface/web remote?

    Default Web interface/web remote?

Any options for say a web interface, similar to the iphone app, but web based? I have sevaral wifi devices, but no remote as of yet and want to at least temporarily use a web device to control my boxee. We have a windows mobile phone with wifi, a regular t-mobile phone with wifi (i think just wap browsing though), and 2 archos mp3 players with wifi and true internet web browser. I have tried that web remote in the announcements thread (near top as of the past couple days). Not sure if it's still in development as it looked like it was a temp project until the iphone app was released. The problem I had with that web app was installing it on windows. There were file name conflicts (files had no extentions, so it conflicted with folders with the same name). Are there any alternatives? or is it keyboard and mouse until I set up a remote?

You could give my app a try. It's designed primarily for the Nokia 770/800 devices and XBMC but works all right in Boxee. I'd love to get feedback on its performance on other devices (I don't have any smartphones myself).

your link states it is for touch screen devices... the bad news is my windows mobile and other cell phone are not touch screens. the archos mp3 players are, but they dont allow software to be installed on them. it would only work on the archos through a web interface.

Ah, fair enough. For what it's worth, it is just a web interface so it should work on the Archos devices if they have a modern web browser. That said, it might not work well for them if they don't have hardware arrow keys since the app currently relies on those to do d-pad navigation. As I said; for better or worse it's currently tailored very specifically to the Nokia devices but I wouldn't mind altering it or making slightly different versions tailored to the strengths of different devices.

there are arrow keys, but i do plan on upgrading to their new device that releases this fall (most likely all touch, no buttons). the browser is opera, but might be a mobile opera type browser. the only problems i have had viewing sites with it is flash. it only supports flash 7 i believe. It doesnt appear that i'll see any conflicts there as i dont think there is any flash in the interface. could you foresee any issues with opera before i try it?

Actually, Opera is ideal; the nokia devices also use an Opera browser. No flash so no issues there. The main problem is going to be that I've laid out the display very "rigidly" to fit the resolution of the Nokia devices so it'll probably look somewhat broken on your screen. I can make a more "liquid" layout for other devices.

I will play with it and let you know. the archos res is 800x480 and I have some pretty decent web and graphic knowledge. If you don't mind, I may just resize what needs to be resized. Any tips if would would want to contribute to making it touch-screen friendly? I would imaging making the buttons clickable (which they may already be), the touch screen would work find with that.

It is touch-screen friendly (the nokia devices are touch-screen devices, too). The buttons are clickable. You may not actually have any display issues if you can run your Archos in full-screen mode as the nokia devices are also 800x480. It's a very simple little "app" -- feel free to modify it to your needs, of course.
