welcome to boxee
You can add from media from other computers in your network vi Settings>Media Sources>Networks and then browse the computer to add..
if you are using local media such as an settings>media sources>local sources and browse for your content...
boxee will automatically index your movies and music but can take time depending on the size of your content

to the net through wireless router I can find my mac if I enter in a new source such as chris-mac.local but but even if I put in my wireless local address with password it's still no good and I can't make out where any of the media is on the atv through boxee it always shows a path like frontrow/movies ... Where is that ! It does show my router and the neighbours router

where on ATV are you media content you can go via "/" to locate them.
if you want to add a network computer try via settings>media sources>network (if not located) try manually adding it (smb://xxxx the ip of the machine)

I have the same situation, I've tried everything, but I am still cannot find my computer. If I manually adding IP address of my computer via SMB file sharing, it says that "no files found at source". Don't know what to do. Even though, I can't connect to Apple TV through shh. When it asks for a password, I'm typing "frontrow" but it doesn't work.

OK, I've managed to connect to apple tv through ssh. Sharing still doesn't work.

I'm in a similar situation. I've gotten sharing on my mac to work and see the computer, but none of the media on it, or the attached external HD are visible. I know I must have something set wrong, im just kinda baffled as to what.

Well, I got it working. After playing today about 4 hours, I noticed that Boxee find my computer suddenly. All I have done, is turn on File Sharing with SMB support (which is turned off by default) and then after some time, it has found my mac. Try that. Turn ON SMB, if it's not, then wait some time and try to rescan. It works for me.

Since I cannot manage to connect to computer as particular user, I've add my "movies" folder to File Sharing and changed access for Everyone to Read Only, then, boxee easily found movies files inside that folder. I've also managed to add Time Capsule to boxee, but it only works in "private" mode, no scanning.

How did you do that?

You mean Time Capsule? You need to make AirPort Disks Guest Access: Read Only in Airport Utility > Disks> File Sharing. Then, it should be in your Network Sources in boxee. Add source, but do check Private mode. Otherwise, it could rebooting continuously with an error. It was so for me. And leave SMB ON, in your File Sharing, this may help you.

In System Prefs.> Network > Sharing, where the Shared folders are, click + and add folder you want. In "users" column change access for Everyone to Read only.

My boxee won't find local, or network media.
I have about 15 gigs of itunes tv stored locally on my atv and none of it shows up.
I have a mac running tiger in my office with about 170 gigs of music and video managed in itunes... none of it shows up. Cant search my network, when I do I get an error msg in boxee.

Hi
if u goto sharing then tick or click file sharing u should see 3 panes with shared folders users and permissions u can ad more shared folders by clicking the plus sign, still not an ideal way of getting boxee to work with atv hopefully this will get sorted.

@tiltedhugh:
ON YOUR MAC:
- go to sys prefs > sharing
- make sure you have your iTunes folder (or any other media folder) on the share list
- hit "options" on lower right - make sure SMB share is checked for your iTunes folder (leave AFP share box checked)
NOTE: to connect to your SMB shared folders from boxee, you will need your user account name and password (found in sys prefs > accounts)
ON BOXEE:
go to settings > network > SMB Shares and put in your username and password for SMB shares
- make sure the "Mount SMB Shares" box is UNCHECKED
** back out of the menus to the main screen (with recommendations, recently added, etc.). you should then see it start indexing and adding stuff to the "recently added" section. **
2 words of warning -
- i had to remove/re-add the shared folders on my mac, with SMB sharing checked to get boxee to index them
- when boxee does see the shares - GET READY TO WAIT! i have roughly 200 movies, 15 seasons of various tv shows, and a 30GB music library. i let it index the movies/tv shows, which it did in about 3 hrs. when it works - it works REALLY well. it pulls all the episode names/movie synopsis, etc. HOWEVER, i completely gave up on trying to index my music, i let it go overnight and it was less than 10% through.
hope that helps!

one more thing....
if you have a directory structure with shared folders inside other shares:
- go to the highest level shared folder in finder
- highlight folder, hit command+i to get info
- at the bottom of the window, under "sharing and permissions", click the gear and select "apply to all enclosed items". this makes the sharing preferences recursive, which shares all the underlying folders/files.

Well, I've tried the exact instruction above, and still a no go. I waited 30 minutes. I've also tried:
Videos / Sources / Network Source / Add source - scans then nothing...
Tried to manually enter source under that menu as well, and get the "no files found at source" message.
Folders are shared with SMB will a few small movies (all supported formats) at the correct permissions. Tried restarting MacBook as well. Apple TV is wired through the router, MacBook is wireless. Running the latest version of everything.
I read on another forum that this is a known issue, but it seems that some people are getting this to work. There must be something in the configuration that's different for those of us that don't have any luck.

This is in leopard, because im on tiger and dont see anything. I see a place for sharing my itunes folder in the firewall tab of sharing. Nothing about SMB

Well, I got it to work - here's how:
I did some more research, and found a post on MacRumors. The only way he got it to work was by putting his videos in his Users / Public folder (shared by default when sharing is turned on). So, I dumped a movie in there, and searched the network for shares - Boxee found none.
Just for kicks I tried to "Manually Enter IP / Name", and then it worked. It not only showed the two folders I shared, but gave me access to my whole computer to find any folders I wanted to make as sources. I think dropping something in there triggered a connection between Boxee and the computer. Something that verified it as being a readable source. Once it's done the first time, I found that removing the movie - even shutting down the "Public" share still let me log in at future attempts. A network browse still doesn't work, but I can get in by doing a manual IP / username / password login.
With a little more experimenting, I discovered you don't have to keep your username and password in Settings / Network.
Streaming now works flawlessly. I'm very excited to see what comes next to Boxee...

ok!!! I got it!
It was a matter of figuring out what the user password on my windows sharing settings was! But it's shared now. A few minor flubs, things like it reading stuff in my documents folder as some movie called document...DOH!
Now.. to get it to see the external HD connected to my mac....

Ditto. My machine isn't picking up anything at all in terms of my media or other machines on the network. Running jailbroken atv 2.2 and latest v. of Boxee.

Digging up this old thread.
Can anyone explain why this is so hard?
Can someone please give some support for Tiger users? Please?
This is the major downer with boxee, we only get half of it's features on the Atv. :(

sorry chaps, not to seem like a dutz...
I've never been able to point boxee(on Atv) in the direction of the media which is on an external HD connected to the Mac Mini in my office.
I also run boxee threre,(on the mini) and pointing it to that HD for the media,(in an iTunes folder) was quite painless.
The reason I mentioned Tiger is most people showed how to set up SMB on Leopard, and some of the sharing options are quite different.
I'm really sorry to be lagging behind, I just want to know how to allow these things to communicate. :o
update:
I've got the Atv to see the mini, but it can't get to that HD.
"No Results Found" when browsing for music or movies.
It even says "Connected", for the folder I created under "media devices", even has the little music/video icons.
I also see smb//"my IP Address" which is tells me I have the network ok?

Thanks for the link, but I've seen this.
Again, this video is for OS 10.5.
Things are a bit different in 10.4.
Are there any users out there who can help please?
Perhaps it's something small I'm missing, but tutorials on Leopard do me no good here.

i'm glad that you are being considerate, and using a previous thread... but you will have better luck posting a new one... specific to your issue.
be as detailed as possible. :)
