Not sure what happened as no configuration changes were made outside of a system restart, but no all media that was scanned in plus images and descriptions are no longer appearing. Just the configured sources icons.
Please note configured sources are on an external USB 2.0 device.

Thats strange ... try restart boxee and add the media again by:
For videos ....
go to "video->My Video"
("music"->My Music or "pictures" ->My Pictures)
select ->"options"
choose "sources" (the 4th option)
you should see your external HD as part of the list and you'll be able to browse it
Then add the external HD as a source.
from the home screen select "settings"
go to "media sources"
choose "local sources" and then "add new source"
you should be able to add folders from your external HD as sources.
After adding the external HD as a source it will automatically be scanned and the items will be retrieved.
You will then see the appropriate media content in the relevant sections My Videos ,My Music etc...

please note that if boxee thinks the source is not available it will not show you the content for this source.
so if boxee for any reason could not access your external HD it will not display any of its media items.
please test if you can access the drive from osx.

@marcel - thats what I ended up doing. My library is pretty big so it obviously took awhile to update the library again.
@vulcan - from the Mac OSX side I was able to access the drive. It was never disconnected, in the past I've encountered issues with the Fat32 filesystems, but this drive is HPFS.
