So, I've been running Boxee on a dual monitor Mac Mini (24" Dell Ultrasharp and a 47" 1080p TV) but I decided that I also wanted to be able to watch Boxee from bed.
Generally, I just leave Boxee running on the 2nd monitor (the HDTV) and turn the TV itself on/off when I want to use it. So I thought that all I would need to do is mirror the display of the TV on a 3rd display. So I bought a cheap 24" monitor and a DVI splitter - with the intention of running both the TV (through a HDMI-->DVI adapater) and the new monitor through the DVI splitter into a single DVI cable which would then plug into the Apple Mini-Display port with a DVI--->MiniPort connector (which I already had). Then I would just leave Boxee running on both mirrored displays and turn them on/off when I wanted to watch one or the other.
Bought the DVI splitter, plugged everything in - so far so good. Great looking picture on both the TV and 2nd monitor. Then I turn off the TV with the intention of watching the monitor in bed - BOOM - the monitor starts freaking out and flashing colors, white screens, and short fragments of the correct video. WTF?
I reverse the on/off situation and turn the TV on and the monitor off and the TV starts freaking out - albeit with a different effect - the bottom of the screen gets distortion and static.
I have heard about the need for a powered DVI splitter - but this works fine when I have both displays on (i.e. when it needs the most juice). Yet its freaking out if a single display is off. I'd like to be able to have them both wired in, but only one on (if for no other reason than saving electricity).
I tried following the instructions in this article (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070326221246345) and removing the 6 and 7 pin from the DVI connector - but it didn't do anything.
