The linked discussion will work fine once you have already opened your ATV to have RCP and SSH working, so you can manually install the Boxee software. To install SSH, I used the patchstick image from http://www.atvpatch.com/ at the bottom. The direct link to the image is http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=939e746f8b83c01619747bd91027d4dd7b927f4f 1ee48ac1
From there you have to get dd for windows and image a 1 GB or bigger thumbdrive. I see there are instructions to do that here: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Booting_from_a_USB_Thumbdrive
Using this patchstick, I could SSH in, but I couldn't RCP. To get RCP working I had to mount the root filesystem as read/write and then chmod the RCP binary file to 777. Then I could install the Boxee software as described in the above link.
If this is still intimidating for you (it's a lot of command line work) you may have to wait for the boxee patchstick maker for windows to come out, or for some nice person to make a dd image of the current boxee patchstick so we can use dd for windows.
The boxee software is great, when they get it finished, it will be a superb frontend. I've got two dedicated XBMC xboxes in my house, and I'll love to be able to replace them with this.
