see it at http://vimeo.com/2010794

boxee for Linux has the following software requirements:

ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy gibbon) or 8.04 (hardy heron) x86 (not x86_64) operating system
for nvidia gpus, latest nvidia proprietary drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
for ati gpus, latest ati proprietary drivers from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
if you have a lirc compatible remote, for example, windows MCE remote, install lirc using sudo apt-get install lirc command. we also support direct hardware mapping for supporting Apple IR and other usb based devices usually not supported under lirc, and can be contacted via support@boxee.tv or http://forum.boxee.tv to set those up.
visual effects (compiz fusion) should be disabled. this is done by System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects, set to None

to get boxee for Linux, go to http://app.boxee.tv/download, and follow the instructions.

hardware requirements (this is hardware we tested with, other hardware may be supported as well)

gpu

nvidia 6150le igp, go7300 mobile, 8600m gt mobile and 7,8 series desktop gpus
intel 945*, 965, X3000, X3100 igp
ati x1600 mobile gpu

* see known issues below

cpu

current intel and amd processors

audio

intel hda

any other alsa-supported should work

if using any other hardware, please post at this forum thread for other hardware tested with, mileage and tips.

changes:

complete UI overhaul
play content available from: Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central, MySpaceTV, NextNewNetworks, On Networks
connect to videos from Hulu and CBS straight from friends activity and recommendations
manage your personal RSS feeds from http://app.boxee.tv and access them through boxee (on My Feeds under Internet Video or Internet Music)
navigation in media is vertical (up/down) instead of horizontal (left/right)
mouse is supported and enabled by default for new installations (for upgrades it can be enabled via Settings > Appearance)
application settings (YouTube, Flickr, Last.fm) are now accessible from the Settings menu
improved SMB support, which also fixes accessing your media via the Apple TV
when using a keyboard, the ESCAPE button always takes you to the previous screen
improved lyrics support
improved subtitles look and feel, support for subtitle switching and fixed media going Speedy Gonzales for a few seconds when subtitle are applied
when working in off-line mode, you can now properly access your local content
numerous bug fixes
many fixes from our friends at xbmc.org
moved boxee install directory to /opt/boxee under Ubuntu (POSIX compliance FTW :) )

known issues

this is prerelease alpha software. 'nuff said.
doesn't go back from window mode to full screen when compiz is enabled. workaround: disable compiz visual effects as above.
logoff is temporarily disabled, please exit and restart boxee if you wish to switch profile, sorry
still no 64bit build :(
no pause in videos from Comedy Central and MySpaceTV
no forward/reverse for Flash based sites (Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central...)
on some (most) Flash movies - boxee will not identify the end. manual stop is required
some Flash media may play in black-and-white, so go retro, and just playback again to resolve
Flash media volume cannot currently be controlled via boxee. workaround - those nice volume up/down in your tv/receiver remote

special notes

this will be our last gutsy release
intrepid version will be released after ubuntu 8.10 is generally available

conveniently enough, the answer to both questions is:
http://app.boxee.tv/download

however, you need to be an alpha tester to do so.
you can request an invite here:

Thanks -- I'm an alpha tester, but do not see this version available as a source download -- version 3921 is still there. This is on http://app.boxee.tv/download/source

When do Linux users get a new version?

Also - re: x64 support ... I've been running xbmc on X64 Linux and the features have gradually been increasing on the X64 port. I would really like to test an X64 alpha build of Boxee -- even if some functions/features didn't work properly.

Anyone have any idea what the hold up on the packages is? Is is just a logistical issue or is it something more?

bugs... it just wasn't as far as long as the mac version, on the fourth. it sould be pretty solid by the 15th, though. :)

(you can compile the sources, but very basic functionality is not in working order... ie: flash video)

I have 64-bit working, just having some problems with password hashing stopping me from logging in on the current release... I may wait and see if it's fixed in the next release before posting my code so that I can do some further testing, or determine if it's somehow related to 64-bit, but I can't think why it would be...

I have the same setup. It's a little crashy, but I get by with about 1 reboot a day.

@ klee613 did you register at www.boxee.tv and follow the instructions from the download page..

1. Go to System > Administration > Software Sources.
2. In Sources Software dialogue, select Third-Party Software tab, click Add, and enter:
* for Hardy: deb http://apt.boxee.tv hardy main
* for Intrepid: deb http://apt.boxee.tv intrepid main
3. After closing this dialogue you can either use Synaptics and select Boxee for download, or use a terminal window, and enter sudo apt-get install boxee.

To run Boxee, Applications > Sound & Video > Boxee

I get the same error also. I went back to my boxee login to check and make sure I put in the right location and everything was correct. Did I do something wrong?

Oops!!! I didn't go to Synaptics. I have it installed now. I am so excited. I just want to give a shout out to all of the devs on the boxee team. I am excited about the future of boxee.
