I'm thinking about setting up a dedicated boxee box with a minimal Ubuntu server installation. In fact, I'd like to boot directly into boxee without having the overhead of GDM and other unnecessary packages. There's a guide on how to do exactly this for xbmc ( http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32891 ), but requires a considerable amount of extra work which frankly, seems pretty daunting. With all the other customized Ubuntu derivatives popping up everywhere, wouldn't it be possible to make a Boxee derivative so that novices such as myself wouldn't have to set aside a week learning how to configure everything? I doubt I'm the only one who's interested in something like this. Imagine just being able to pop in a cd (or thumb drive) and have a custom Boxee installation on your HTPC in minutes.
Again, may not even be possible in the first place. I don't really know. Instead of a full-on derivative, it could just be something as simple as running a script after installing Ubuntu server.
Edit- so apparently there's something called "xbmc live" which is essentially just a live CD using xbmc, hence allowing you to boot directly into it. Interesting..
