I have created a memory stick that you can run boxee from.
As long as your computer supports GL 1.4 you should not have a problem running it.
I have tested it on both the Wind Netbook and the Acer Aspire One and the system runs without installing it.
It also has a driver for most of the USB ir based remote controls that are out there like the Windows MCE remotes.
This system is based around an Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD. I have installed Boxee 0.9.7.xx and XBMC 9.04 Alpha. It also has Lirc 0.84a.
I have only installed the version of boxee that is supported by the boxee development team as I do not want everyone to ask questions about a non-released version.
This is what is called a persistent install that remembers any changes you make to the system by storing changes on the memory stick. You can run the system to try it out or install permanently to your hard drive. You can use it as a portable boxee that you can run on other computers ( such as at work where you have a broadband connection ).
If someone would like to host the files please let me know, or help out other people here as I only uploaded it to Rapidshare.com and many people do not have an account there. You could also upload it to other program sharing sites like megashare.com or uploading.com.
If you put the files someplace else just list the link here.
Some Notes about this version:
1. If you have to install video drivers for your video card, these will not stay through a reboot.
2. If you start boxee on your system and it just returns to the desktop you have a video driver problem. Remember you have to have open GL 1.4 or better to run boxee. If you computer does not support this then boxee will not run.
3. As soon as the Boxee team releases a new version of boxee for Linux I will build a new version with the current release. I have built the current sources and they run very well under Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.
4. This is not a fix for everything, it will not work with absolutely every remote control, computer, sound card system. This is just an attempt to allow more people to try out boxee without having to know the ins and outs of installing software under Linux
5. Let me know if the effort I went through to create this was worthwhile. If people don't need it I have other projects to work on.
Requirements to build a boxee flash memory stick
1. The files are multi-segment tar files. You will need a program like Winrar to unpack the files and put them back together in a single executable file.
2. You need a flash memory stick of 2 gig in size. Note: there has to be at least 1.88 gig usable space on it.
3. Download these files or have a friend that has an account to download them for you.
4. A computer that can boot from a flash memory stick
5. Windows with XP or Vista, maybe Windows 7
The total file size compressed is 1.4 gig. Its this size to create a persistent file structure to save the changes you make to the memory stick.

Ok what you have been waiting for, how to create your own memory stick.
Now that you have downloaded the sections of the file and placed them all in the same place or directory on your computer we are set to go.
1. Double click on the first program segment
(Build-Buntu.9.04-9.7.part1.rar)
2. Your winrar, 7zip or other archival program will start.
3. Select where you want the recreated program to exist
4. Unpack the arhive and now you will see a new file named:
Build-buntu-9.04-9.7.exe
5. Plug in your flash memory stick
6. Open My Computer and find your memory stick.
7. Left click on the memory stick and select Format
8. Format the stick to fat32 and name it anything you want.
9. Remember the drive letter your computer has assigned to it.
10. Double click on Build-buntu-9.04-9.7.exe
11. Select the memory stick you want to write to.
12. Say ok and the system will build you a new memory stick with everything on it.
13. Exit the build program.
That's it you now have a boot able boxee.
Eject the flash drive and plug the drive into a computer that can boot from a flash memory stick and give it a wirl.
Take care and have fun with boxee
