Boxee already supports external USB HDD's on Mac's and Linux. Just not Apple TV's.

will this next release still be classed as alpha or are we moving into beta?
gregwa
October 10th, 2008, 09:57 AM
according to the main blog, "...release a new version of our alpha for Mac and Ubuntu (and Apple TV..). it is going to be our final alpha release. after that, it’s beta time…"
Hope this answers your question.

Thanks to a friend who has a Mac, I had the chance to patch my almost new AppleTV and have boxee installed in it, all I can say boxee team is a BIG KUDOS!!!
You have done a great job, and have opened the Pandora's box. I love my AppleTV, but now I love it even more. I have a small collection of DVD's and I am in the process of transferring them to my AppleTV, now, thanks to you guys I can do it in DivX format with a better resolution :D
Now, I have to say that love boxee and this news about the new version is really making me feel like this next week will last a month!!! If this is the last Alpha, oh boy... can't wait to see the beta...
Again, great job guys!!!

Hey guys,
I just learnt of Boxee two days back when i received an Apple TV as a gift and wanted to add functionality to it. From what i've been reading and watching on the web, Boxee appears to be great.
Is there anyone who can send me an invitation. I've already registered for the alpha version, however, i read that it could be months before i receive an a reply.
Thanks, and for those of you have it...hope the new release is as good as its made to be.

Hi all,
Eagerly awaiting the new version. Any idea what time it will go live? It is coming up to 10:30 here in the UK.
I assume boxee is developed out of the US and therefore probably be this evening/tomorrow before us lot in the UK get to play with the new version.
Can't wait. Any new tip bits/teasers available.

Glad to see TimeCapsule support. Very cool. Tho I had to manually add it as a source as it wasn't auto detected. I think you should add a . in the number pad on the onscreen keyboard to save some effort entering IP addresses. Yay for timecapsule!!!
Is it possible to change the Skin on the AppleTV? I kinda like the green one better than the live show one. Minor issue I know..
Seems less laggy during navigation.
That's the only feedback I have so far. I have only used it for 20 minutes tho ;)

Trust me, the site will not go down. If any of you know about the recent Mother 3 translation (mother3.fobby.net/), that site did not go down when it launched, and when someone posted a blog post they would hundreds of posts all throughout the day (going up to around 2000 total over the course of about 2 days). We're barely on page 8 for this thread and only a few hours are left.

New GUI - I kinda like the old one better
Seems to be much snappier
I only had a few minutes to play before heading to work.
I would like to change the skin for sure. Haven't checked for MKV support yet.
To me - access to my Timecapsule was key cause it saves me moving stuff around.

Update looks nice. Great to have Hulu, CBS, RSS feeds. But... Streaming of Hulu and CBS is not very smooth right now. Will have to see if my broadband is just running slow, or if it's a boxee issue. Like being able to go straight to TV Shows from the Video top menu.

Interpid is not supported in this release. We're just no happy with the quality of Boxee on 8.10. We're working on it and will keep you guys posted.

Im having some bugs with the new linux version.
- It crashes when trying to play an mp3 (maybe some issues with setting digital sound out to default?).
- Boxee went black on idle, and did not wake up. I can see the mousepointer when moving it.

Actually, it is working on my Intrepid version. However, the quality isn't as good as 8.04.

Told you the new version would be sexy....what do you guys think?

honestly, it was a bit of a shock... it felt a little 'crowded' at first.
but after a little time with it, i realized that it was crowed with media, not ui.
you guys pulled of what ms and apple have failed to do so many times:
make the media the focus. boxee is wall-to-wall media, now... and it looks great!
bravo... very well done!!!
(and the color and widget styling are just sexy!)

it rules, seriously.
PS. Most of the new streaming sources are valid only in the USA :(

I'm running Boxee on an Apple TV with a DSL connection using wifi 802.11g and the vidoeo on Hulu and the CBS shows (that's all I've tested so far) are choppy and/or freezing frequently. Are people with Ethernet connections and higher speed internet services are having the same issues. I would cancel my basic comcast cable service in a minute if the video was less jerky and it wasn't a hardware limitation of my Apple TV that was the culprit.

This release is incredible. Much faster, more stable and the skin updates are great. The menu is easier to navigate as well.

I'm certain neither CBS or Hulu have a transcoded video feed ala Youtube or Revision3. So Boxee must be playing these sources via its built-in Flash player. If your machine has a hard time playing full screen video from CBS or Hulu outside of Boxee (as mine does) I'd imagine the problem wouldn't be fixed by viewing them full screen from within Boxee.
I've found that quitting Gnome and running a light weight window manager helps a bit.

yeah... there is an app called bxflplayer that seems to handle the flash streams. i have a feeling it's a sdl wrapper for webkit, or maybe even libflash.so, directly.
stream on my system are a bit laggy, and eat the cpu... but the payback is not bad.
in another thread, one of the devs said they are working on options to set the stream quality.

Looks like the ability to filter movies by genre is gone. Only choices in the right menu are to change the screen layout and the sort. That's a feature that needs to be added back. When you have several hundred movies, filtering by genre is a very nice feature to have.
If the filter feature is still available but somewhere I haven't found, please let me know. Thanks.

Upgrades under linux went great, this version is much improved!
Question - I'm not seeing the new (CBS, etc) Internet show options... is that just a matter of adding some rss feeds somewhere?

I think that it doesn't matter if your using wifi or ethernet cable to access de internet. Wifi g gives up to 54mbps (less in reality but enought for internet streaming of low quality flash movies like the ones you are trying to get) and ethernet cable up to 100mbps (or 1Gbps if you had a great switch, what I doubt will be the case)
But what matters is your internet download bandwith. I don't know how things are there in the US. Here in Europe you can have from a small 1mbps connection up to 20Mbps with DSL connections (trough old analog lines) or even more if you get optical...
I cannot check because CBS content is not allowed here in Spain (only for US) but you can do a simple check... Try running the same video o the computer and see if it goes also choppy...
My bet is that you don't have enough bandwith with your internet provider... time to fat it up a little...
Hope I could help.
Best regards,
Jur.

@ johninsj try removing your .boxee file and try running again if this does not work then removing your profile and login in from scratch..it seeems like an upgrade hitch...
