I recently purchased one of the newest generation Mac Minis. It's the lower end model, but I did splurge an extra $50 to get the in-store 2gb memory upgrade. I've got all my content in a /media folder contected via FW800. All of my movies are MP4 files and all of my TV shows are MKV files.

When I go to play any one of my files, they are played back for me at double or triple speed. At first I thought it was an MKV thing, but then I tried one of my MP4s and experienced the same problem. Because my MP4s are my movies, I chose to view the trailer. That trailer also played back at 2x or more.

Finally I went out to test out playback speeds on internet content and got mixed results. First I tried ABC, and it wouldn't launch at all (but I think I saw another thread about this). Then I tried CBS, digging down to S9 Ep1 of CSI. It seemed to playback okay. Then I moved on to try TEDTalks, selecting one from 2009 about jazz chords and I got more super speedy playback. Finally, I tried going directly to Apple Trailers and picked a few at random. Again I was back to the problem of watching everything in 2x speeds with no clue how to slow it down.

I was originally using v0.9.10(.something) and then downgraded to v0.9.8.4882 thinking perhaps that was the problem. That didn't do me any good though, as the problem still persisted.

Am I missing an obvious solution somewhere? Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks in advance!

I'm experiencing this as well :(

DVD playback seems to work the way it should.

Tom (@tsella (http://twitter.com/tsella)) hit me up on Twitter after I extended my inquiry to the entire lazyweb. He said that the double speed usually comes with no audio, and to check the analog/digital audio toggle setting as well.

I toggled it over to analog and this half-way fixed my problem. Some of my content played normal but my MKVs were still messing up. The next day I found the rest of the solution to my playback problem when I lost all audio completely.

My audio cable had become unseated in the process of installing the extra RAM at the Genius Bar. So I took it back to them and they saved me from having to break out the putty knife and from voiding my warranty (Since it was their error to begin with). Once I got home everything worked perfect, for all my media files, and for all the internet content as well. I did switch back to digital audio from analog, to see what would happen, and I got a horrible clicking noise on my MKVs. So having the audio toggle set to analog is definitely part of the solution as well.

Lesson learned: your audio cable (mini internal) can be not properly seated but still have enough contact to give you sound. If I hadn't carried the mini across the house it wouldn't have come fully unseated for me to realize it was the problem.
