View Full Version : DVD issues with Boxee

Here is a little list of bugs that I have found in Boxee on the AppleTV:

Video: Specifically Video_TS folders

DVD menu seem impossible to navigate because Boxee's UI has focus.
Some DVD's confuse Boxee's autoplay feature... Curious George and Why We Fight both causes incorrect chapters to start playing.
Finding Nemo, is a great example where you have a combination of both Problem 1 and Problem 2. The Movie will start the Main Menu, and you can't navigate to start the film.

Wrong Video Issues/Quirks

After you pick a video, and select that it's the "Wrong Movie" button it will ask you the type of media. It then gives you a list of completely weird title suggestions. I select the first option to type in the correct title. IMHO, It should auto-populate the existing title. Re-typing a long name with a remote bites. :)
If your search fails you also have to start from scratch. It would be nice if this field could cache the last entry, (again, typing on that AppleTV with the remote is horrible despite the nice screen keyboard implementation. :D )
The initial "Wrong Movie" suggestions are usually horrible despite having what looks like the correct film title. Often the Title that is displayed is exactly the text that I will enter into the search field and I will get completely different and actually relevant titles.
After selecting the correct movie the Thumbnail in the details screen will update but the Thumbnail in the Video screen doesn't change.
Much like the bug above. If you have 2 movies that get grouped together... like a Disc1, Disk2 movie. If you change the Movie Poster for both films the folder thumbnail does not update.

Let me know if I should be posting bugs elsewhere. I'd do screenshots, but I don't know how on the AppleTV... so... unless you want iPhone photos I am hoping text is okay. :D

If you post an official terminology post I could make sure that I am communicating clearly.

Agreed! Very weird choices that come up when you first initiate wrong video. They don't even make sense.

I wish you could just search for a Thumbnail. Or better yet. I put my movies in their own folder, for organization on my part. It would be great, I think, if we could include a jpg or something similiar of the poster in the folder that would be the default poster thumbnail and Boxee wouldn't then search for a new image. I like the fact that I can pick and choose my posters.

Just a thought. Can't always rely on it being automatic.

I can't get the video_ts to load, there's a bar at the upper right hand corner of the screen, but it keeps flashing then nothing.

Actually nothing on my NAS works - m4v or video_ts

I actually really appreciate the Apple TV software now after getting nowhere with Boxee.

hi

thanks for the report ..we will check into the dvd issues ,regarding the "wrong video" we are always trying to improve this issue so boxee would automatically recognize your content and this would be a last resort (this is work in progress) ..regarding the thumbnail issue it seems as if it is cached and needs to be indexed again ..you can try and close and restart boxee might solve the trick..

as to the name that appears when first selecting the wrong video ,this comes from one of the words in the media content name.

Hmm. I don't have any issues streaming my rip'd DVD's in native format and divx format from my NAS. Not saying that you don't have issues, just never experienced your issue. I assume you have the share connected and such. Did you try disconnecting share and reconnecting? Did you reinstall/reboot Boxee? Only suggestions since I didn't experience this issue with my new install of Boxee. I have noted that a reboot had solved some weird issues that I first experienced.

Andrew is using the Apple Airport Extreme "NAS" not a traditional Ethernet NAS or FreeNAS (my favorite) on a PC. Apple handles this SMB frame differently than traditional vendors.

It tries to load each .VOB one-by-one - hence the blinking. Again, we're working on the issue with the Extreme/Time Capsule and their handling of SMB shares.

Mounting your drive in OS-X via AFP:// or using the Extreme Disk Agent will solve this problem in the mean time.

I can't get any video_ts folders to load from an smb share on my mac. I get the error "Failed to retrieve data". I have tried the public folder and the movies folder on my mac with teh same results. In both cases I navigated directly to the share using the "add source" menu and "browse". I have my username and password configured in my default profile. Any ideas?

I am finding some of the same issues as stated above. It seems consistent on the majority of the full DVDs that I rip. The BOXEE "assigned" Title or Chapter VOB/start pointer, is incorrect or cannot successfully be run without following the DVD process flow. Leaving with a start in wrong title, title in midstream, language issues, sub-title issues, etc. My present work around is to remove the entry from the Movies library, then adding manually through Sources, selecting the Video_TS.IFO file, and adding the proper title information.

Would be nice to see a setting or the like that allows for always selecting the Video_TS.IFO start entry point when adding a movie to the library.

+1 on this, this would make it a lot easier in playing the DVD correct (instead of starting in a random movie).

Edit: Special thread for this on http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=2270
