if you've just updated your atv to the latest 2.2 version, only to discover you've lost remote control under boxee :( no worries :), just update the launcher application, and you should be good to go.
click the launcher (yours may say only Boxee, unlike the one shown):
http://blog.boxee.tv/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/atv_launcher.jpg
click Update:
http://blog.boxee.tv/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/atv_launcher_update.jpg
and you're set.
(gidonc thanks for the pics!)

It does work that easily...I guess it automatically disables the ATV screensaver. At least mine was after I downloaded the new update.
However, I still had to go into settings on that main menu you show and put "no" on use internal IR. Then the play button worked when logging on to Boxee. At first I could only highlight items but nothing would select them. I remember reading about the internal IR thing and after I did that, the play/select button worked.
Any chance that eventually we could use the ATV screensaver with this product or am I missing something?
Thanks.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, or this is a separate issue. When I first install Boxee (including the Launcher update), I am able to use the remote just fine. However, when I reboot the AppleTV for the first time after installing, the Remote stops working. I can pair and unpair, and reboot (- and menu for a few seconds), but the menu, play and directional buttons otherwise are nonresponsive. Any ideas?

Same here. Finally got a working USB stick, everything installed perfectly. Restart, and BAM. Nothing. And it's not like ATV has a keyboard I can use as a backup manual control. How do we fix this?

Yes same thing happened here, I guess I pressed the >Play and Menu buttons for 5 seconds causing the Apple TV remote to Unpair.
Check this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2827 and see how to Pair the RC again.
Boxee rocks guys! good job

I installed boxee for the first time today and after running the two updates, the XBMC and Boxee ones under Update, I lost all remote function. I did disable my screen saver before I ran the update.
I did not see any launcher update when running the update for the first time.
I tried to unpair the remote and tried the play and menu buttons for a few seconds and still no response.
any ideas??? Thanks guys!

my AppleTV is 2.1 (is that part of the problem?) and running Applecore's aTV Flash software. i manually installed Boxee using the guide found here: http://forum.atvflash.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=493
now my remote doesn't work. if i restart the appletv, i can pair/unpair it to my heart's content at the diagnostics/restore screen, but upon reboot i lose control of it again. how do i get the pairing to stick past a reboot? i can't access any options on the AppleTV at all. help!
my only solution seems to be restore the AppleTV, update to 2.2, install a newer version of aTV Flash (3.3.2), and then update Boxee. does this seem like the right path or is there a something i am missing? my one worry is reports that Sapphire does not work with aTV 3.3.2, so i would rather not update if i don't have to.
anyway, i am too tired to try it tonight. i will check back tomorrow afternoon and play with it then.

joshp,
how were you able to restore your atv? i can't even do the menu - (-) factory restore trick because my box isn't responding to my remote.
the menu loads up, but it doesn't respond to any remote input.
any tips anyone...???
Thanks

to get my remote running with ATV i have to login (ssh) to ATV after reboot and kill boxee and finder process, after this my remote is running.

try rebooting ATV and then try to run the launcher again..

Thanks for all the input guys.
@onesixeight,
the menu and - reboot method still worked for me, even though all other remote input was ignored. maybe i'm just lucky there. you could try a reboot by logging in via terminal and typing "sudo reboot"
@marcel,
Tried a reboot. Both via the terminal and by using the - and menu buttons. Upon reboot, I can navigate the restore/diagnostics screen (i can even pair and unpair the remote while on this screen), but upon a second reboot I lose the remote control again when i am returned to the main menu, so i can't run the launcher. The light on the AppleTV flashes amber when i try to use the remote, and pairing it doesn't work.
@cyberdance,
that sounds like the way to do it. i am logged in via terminal. what are the commands to kill processes? did doing it just once work as a permanent fix? are you successfully using boxee after doing that? thanks in advance for your help.

1. login to ATV
2. enter this command "ps -ax"

find this two processes in the list
3. enter this command "kill -9 113" (first kill boxeeservice)
4. enter this command "kill -9 110" (than finder)
after this everything is working fine to the next reboot

cyberdance is brilliant! that worked great.
the first time i did a sudo reboot after your commands without thinking, and that broke it again. however, i did it a second time and, after killing the Finder, the AppleTV comes back to life and the remote works great. i updated boxee, xbmc, and the launcher again. seems to be working. i guess i can repeat the terminal commands if i have problems after another reboot.
thanks a lot!

I think the problem is that boxeeservice is started after finder app, i will try to find a way to change this.

I seem to have the same problem with the remote and aTV 2.1 (I assume - no means to check - bought it today). When I start ATV (after installing Boxee) it freezes on the main menu. Nothing I can do.
What's worse is that I can not login through terminal. The box is not found....
I have no clue what to do next. Is there anyway to virginize the box and start over?
Thanks for any help

So is there any patchsticks out there that can virginize the box and simply reinstall officially firmware and then I can install boxee afterwards?
I really want boxee to work on my box, but at irst I need to get the remote working again.
I had ATVflash also btw and firmware 2.1 on appletv

Hi,
Is there a way to run these steps as a startup script?
I have installed boxee on 2.1 without the patchstick since I already had ssh and ATVFiles setup, but the atv led flashes orange even when in the menu and the remote does not respond.
Only the steps you suggested solve the issue until the next restart.
Now I know, I could just restore and update to 2.2 and run the patchstick, but boxee, as great as it is, is still alpha, and on the ATV hardware really sluggish, so I wanted to keep the ATV Files also, plus I would like to keep the 140GB I already have in there

I had the same problem, couldn't get the remote to work or even unpair and then pair. I tried several solutions from the forum, and then this one worked:
login to the appletv via ssh as normal (ssh -1 frontrow@appletv.local)
Then type these commands:
launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/tv.boxee.helper.plist
sudo rm ~/Library/LaunchAgents/tv.boxee.helper.plist
(enter 'frontrow' as the password when prompted by 'sudo')
sudo reboot
Then I was able to unpair and pair my remote.

Hi
I just updated to ATV 2.3 and re-installed Boxee with the new Patchstick, updated the launcher and the Boxee Alpha application. Then tried to run Boxee but the remote control froze at the login screen. Absolutely no response...any suggestions what to do?
I've tried repairing the remote twice and rebooting the ATV a couple of times with no success. My wife is going to go spare if she can't watch the next episodes of True Blood on Boxee
Thanks!

Just want to share this experience with the hope that it might help someone. I am running ATV v 2.2 with the latest version Boxee. I tried to exit Boxee for the first time in a few days. The ATV menu showed up but there was no remote control response. (Amber light lit but no menu interaction.) I rebooted ATV (chose restart NOT Factory Restore) and it restarted to ATV menu. Still no remote control. I then tried the solution linked earlier in this thread regarding the unpairing and pairing of the remote. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2827 ) It worked! Or so I thought. At that point I realized the sound was gone. I rebooted ATV and chose RESTART (not Factory Restore). ATV menu showed up with Boxee intact. Sound, Boxee and ATV seem to be working. I know I am not really giving any answers here, but if you have similar experience these steps might help.

Apple TV is set to never go to screen saver

I am having a simular problem (atv v2.3, boxee 0.9.7.4825).
If I reboot my atv most times the remote does not work very well, you need to wait 5-10 sec between button presses. (you can just keep pressing the button over and over again and it works about ever 5-10sec)
Sometimes if I let the atv go to screen saver and then press menu to exit the screen saver the remote will work fine after that.
Sometimes if I run boxee the remote will start to work again.
If I leave boxee running for a long period of time (1hr+) with out doing anything with it, then try to use the remote the remote does not work very well (same behavor as above, need to wait 5-10sec between button presses). On thing to note is that boxee does not go to screen saver during the 1hr that I am not using it, I did not turn off the screen saver myself but maybe the last update turned it off. (I will try to check)
The last time that I reloaded everything (aka factory reload, boxee reload) the remote worked for a period of time and everything seemed very snappy but now things seem to be slowing down and the remote does not work as well.
Has anyone else had this type of problem?
thanks,
davilla

Are you talking about in frontrow or in boxee. The above show that you are in frontrow.
It happens in both frontrow and in boxee, although I do normally find that if I am able to get boxee to launch the remote starts working again for a while.
So here is he way it works.
1. plug ATV in.
2. boot up - remote does not work very well
(at this point I can do two different things a or b)
3a. launch boxee
4a. remote works fine.
5a. leave boxee running (without doing anything with it) for about 1hr
6a. remote no longer works very well.
3b. leave the atv until the screen saver kicks in.
4b. exit out of the screen saver.
5b. most times the remote will start working again. (but not always)
This looks more like a problem with my atv but I want to be sure because I already had it replaced once due to a network issue.
thanks.

Say more about "remote does not work very well", be detailed. I have several AppleTVs and one of the remotes has a funky right button. You have to really mash it down to be seen.

Basicly the atv does not seem most of the button presses. it seems to only receive a remote command every 5-10seconds. so if you want to go down to the bottom menu item it takes a very long time. Most of the time this happens when I have frontrow running, but I have had seen the same thing happen when boxee is running.
I just did a factory reset and reinstalling everything and the problem is still happening. I am making sure that I have the latest plugin (such as nitotv) just to make sure it is not something to do with them.
any help with ideas of things to try would be great. thanks,

I just read through the entire thread. I just installed BOXEE / XMBC off a patchstick onto my ATV and updated the three software packages. I then clicked on BOXEE and the system gets to the log in screen where for some reason my name is there (BOXEE apeared to be erased after I had updated my ATV to V 2.3 so I dont know how my username was still there?!). Once it shows the BOXEE login screen the system no longer allows any remote input. I dont know anything about the SSH stuff, please help me!!!

I dont know anything about the SSH stuff, please help me!!!

try going to the boxee download menu in frontrow and redownload both the launcher and boxee apps. I had something like this happen one other time I refreshed my system and this fixed the problem.
It is still weird that after the refresh boxee remembered your username, are you sure you did a full refresh?

Thank you MWPEI, I actually did that and it is still not working. I am not sure if I did a full refresh, All I know is that after the update to 2.3 Boxee and the rest of the stuff wasnt there. I dont mind doing a full wipe, I just dont know how :(

I am making sure that I have the latest plugin (such as nitotv) just to make sure it is not something to do with them.
any help with ideas of things to try would be great. thanks,
Factory Restore and see if you still have IR problems. If you have IR problems after a Factory Restore and you have not run the patchstick, then you have an AppleTV problem with IR.

Davilla,
The remote works fine in the native Apple menu. It just stops working entirely when I enter the Boxee program, even before selecting my user name.

That was a reply to mwpei. To debug your issue you will need to provide more info such as console.log and the output of "ps -axww".

Thanks!

I also still pretty much cant use the remote in boxee...
In front row it works great.
The strange thing is when i get into hulu it seems to be way more responsive.
Its to the point where i just wanna leave it in hulu and never have to go back into boxee because i wanna throw the remote.
I cant wait for the new iphone remote app that was just twittered about ;)

I was ready to install Boxee on my Apple TV until I read these posts. Now, I'm afraid to install it. Bummer! :(

I have this exact same problem. It typically happens in the morning when the ATV's been on all night. I tried leaving it on overnight in both Boxee and just in FrontRow - both times the remote "doesn't work well" in the morning. This affects both my ATV remote and my Logitec Harmony remote.
I'll press a button, and the LED on the ATV doesn't flash... I'll keep trying and once every few seconds, the LED will flash as if it's received the signal and the cursor will move.
I've got FrontRow, XBMC and Boxee 4825 installed.
To me, this sounds like a FrontRow issue.. but what do I know? :)
Is there a way to bypass FrontRow and boot right into Boxee on load?

Well I am kind of glad that someone else is having the same problem, there is a way to boot directly to boxee using the new launcher, I think you can turn this on in the settings section of the launcher.
Does anyone have any suggestions how we can trouble shoot this?

I am having the same problem as well. It almost seems like it needs to "warm up" before the remote regains some of it's responsiveness(In both Boxee and the apple tv software). I have tried the remote that came with the ATV as well the one with my Macbook and both behave the same way.
I have the same symptom where leaving my ATV running overnight or all day seems to make the remote unresponsive. I find I have to click the remote multiple times before the ATV light blinks or a menu is selected in Boxee. Every time I click I press harder on that little remote, I think I am going to break it one of these days if my dog doesn't eat it first! He has a strange interest in it every time I hold it.
I am going to look into it further tonight, I might try restoring the software and see if the problem persists.

Even with the remote issue it is still well worth having Boxee installed on your Apple TV (I mean really well worth it, I would not purchase a ATV with out it). The worst case is you have to reboot your ATV just before you start using it, plus the boxee developers have a great track record for finding problems and fixing them (once we can all figure out where the problem is actaully happening)

Thanks for the link, one of the people had the following solution:
Put a small part of a Post-It note over the IR-receiver of the -TV. Not kidding You! See other posts about the remote. VERY STRANGE. Will hopefully be addressed by Apple soon with a "patch" inside the box instead of exterior Post-It patching.

Shockingly...this worked for me as well! Definitely "ghetto"!

Plasma or LCD displays will blast a lot of IR noise that can confuse IR receivers. I run a remote sender/receiver setup and had to change to an LCD friendly receiver to filter out the IR noise.
It could be that with the changes in IR handling to support non-Apple remotes, the AppleTV is now much more sensitive to IR noise.
The post-it note acts as an slight IR filter :)

Excellent! I was hoping for a technical explanation. I didn't know about LCD TVs and IR interference, but after doing a bit of searching online, it's pretty common! Apple maybe ramped up the gain on their IR receiver on the last update (people started complaining after 2.3 apparently).
Thanks!

I just installed the latest version and now when I launch boxee the remote doesn't work. It works with XBMC and everything else, but as soon as I go to boxee the system stops responding to the mouse. The light on the AppleTV box doesn't show any response. I'm just stuck on the user screen. I've tried reinstalling the boxee software and the launcher, still doesn't work. Any ideas?
