View Full Version : "Failed to load data"

I'm getting this error after adding a source. The movie files are stored on a NAS but I have no WINS server so usually I connect via IP address. I'm on OSX 10.5

When I add "10.0.0.100" as the source (no username or password) it immediately shows me the available shares. I choose my Movies share and "add source" - it seems to do okay adding the source. The directories in that share appear in the Videos section... but when I attempt to open up one of the directories it drops down an error msg saying "Failed to load data".

If I try it another way, I get a different result. Rather than adding the top level ("Movies" share) as the source, I attempt to add a subdirectory. So from within the "Add network source" action I select one of the subdirectories. In this case it reports "Error 2: Share not available"

I'm familiar enough with XBMC (on an actual XB) but don't have much mac experience, or Boxee either. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Also where are the boxee log files so I can try to debug this locally? Thanks!

Steve

Sorry, I should add:

I was able to successfully add a source from another PC and play videos from that source. One difference is that the machine, a Windows Media Center box, shows up in the list of network servers - even though I don't have a WINS server. It's the only one that does?? (I have multiple machines on my home network and for whatever reason, that single machine is the only one besides the local host that appears in the boxee menu) I don't know much about OSX<->PC networking so I'm not sure if this difference is relevant.

One last thing :)

I used the Manually Add... option to directly add various subdirectories (smb://machine/share/subdir) and similar behavior happens. I can get a full directory listing of both movie files and subdirs (sub-subdirs of the subdir) but if I try to access a subdir it says "Failed to load data" and if I try to play any of the movie files, it ends immediately (no error displayed)

Sorry for the bump, but can anyone help? At least by telling me where the log files for boxee go. I couldn't find it with a forum search ("xmbc.log" returns wrong results?) and I don't know MacOS well enough to know of a standard place they might be...
I'd love to test boxee but this is preventing me from adding any of my movies.
Thanks

hi
not sure i understand you are saying that you have a network at home with several pc but only one or 2 allow you to share the media on boxee ..when you add them manually..did you try and setting>Media Sources>network source and locating the machines..

You can PM your debug logs (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=377) ..

Thanks marcel -- I see the issue in the logs. The problem appears to be that every filename has 1 character at the end truncated:

I get hundreds or maybe thousands of lines in the log that look like this:

23:40:50 T:2966650880 M: 19513344 ERROR: GetDirectory - Failed to stat file smb://10.0.0.100/Movies/The%20Incredible%20Hul
23:40:50 T:2966650880 M: 19513344 ERROR: GetDirectory - Failed to stat file smb://10.0.0.100/Movies/Sweeny%20Tod
23:40:50 T:2966650880 M: 19513344 ERROR: GetDirectory - Failed to stat file smb://10.0.0.100/Movies/Persepoli

each one is missing the last letter of the filename.
Any ideas?

Re: my scenario, if the solution doesn't jump out at you I can send larger log files and try to explain the repro case a little better :)

hi
we need to look into the Buffalo Terastation ...

Just in case - I can confirm that this release does not fix the TeraStation problem.

i jut got into the alpha today, and i have a similar problem. in my case i can see the last character missing from my paths right from the boxee interface; i didn't have to look into the logs.

marcel mentioned the buffalo terastation. my files are on a buffalo linkstation. i've been using that device to host media files, including my full iTunes library, to both macs and PCs for a couple of years now. i may replace it soon with a drobo, however.

my workaround for now is to mount the smb share on my osx box and then point boxee to the mountpoint as a local source

also, fwiw, in the past i have connected to the linkstation with xbmc on an xbox with no issues

I am also seeing this problem with Naslite.

installed boxee on my appletv today, and, of course, my workaround of mounting the network share and then pointing boxee at the local mountpoint doesn't work.

i could probably figure out a way to mount a drive on the appletv via ssh if i have to, but hopefully the issue will be resolved. or i'll buy a drobo. :)

Just thought I'd check in to see if there has been any progress on this bug. I'd really like to test Boxee (and eventually replace my dedicated HTPC) but all of my media is stored on a Terastation so I can't actually use it at all right now :(

Thanks!

nevermind, the HD content takes about 10 seconds to load (buffering maybe?). I just kept clicking it when it didn't load right away and restarted the buffering. I know... im an impatient A$#.

BTW, u guys (admins) are doing a great job. Very helpful. Boxee is awesome on ATV. I expect to drop directtv within the year and just watch this. Off subject question.... any chance live sports will ever be broadcast on HULU/boxee???

I am getting this same error trying to connect to my samba share using boxee on apple tv. I've connected to the share successfully using XMBC on appletv. I think it may have something to do with my password which contains special characters. This is because if I leave the default smb credentials blank I can browse into my domain under 'Add Source' and see the shares but once I've entered my credentials then boxee no longer detects any shares under the domain - it just gives me that "add manual source" option. I tried escaping the special characters in my password with \ and also quoting the entire password - neither worked. Also tried changing my password to alpha/numeric only which did not work - so it may be something more to do with the smb handshake in general - but since I got it working on XMBC so easily I'm surprised boxee is having such a hard time with it. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Sam

Boxee doesnt want to dig past the top level of my shared volume to find the subdirectory that actually contains my media files. When I get past the top level directory during the setup of a network source for videos, the error is "ERROR-INVALID ARGUMENT".

Oddly, when I enabled the UPnP server on this NAS, I had a little more luck getting to the subdirectories and launching media files. But this required a lot of manual navigation/browsing and only worked when searching specific folders (i.e. the "ALL FOLDERS" option yielded the spinning propeller icon then 'Failed To Retrieve Data")

My smb connection is still broken with the new release of boxee - and is also now broken with the new release of xmbc (babylon) so I'm assuming it's shared code. Another note is that shares set up on my ubuntu box work fine, while the shares set up on the centos box do not work - so it could be a configuration problem on the cent box - although those cent shares do work in general with other clients... any thoughts? I did send a debug log a while back and did not get any response.

I am experiencing this problem as well, after adding sources, they seem to work for a very short period but after hibernation the sources go dead. They are still listed but boxee can't open them.

I am connecting to a Windows Server 2008 machine in the local network. XBMC on my ancient xbox has no problems.
