we have just released a test/preview/bleeding edge version for mac, atv (and if you have a link to the windows alpha, that was updated too).
we already know of issues with this version, and decided to release it anyway for now where we could.
linux does build and run, but is unstable to the point we decided not to release it right now, and it will be available for the next point release, probably by our new york meetup (http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/02/20/new-alpha-version-coming-boxee-meetup-in-nyc/) event. this is a big downer to myself, and looking forward to have this resolved ASAP.
get the updated version at http://app.boxee.tv/download.
regarding changes in this version, i will post release notes later on today.
in the meanwhile, from the blog post (http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/03/06/new-version-hulu-update/):
we started boxee because there was an opportunity in the media center space for a product/company who put the user first, while respecting the rights of content owners. over the past year and a half we’ve listened to users, content owners, investors, working to create that platform.
while we don’t come from an entertainment or cable background, we are learning quickly. it is a complex business. the fact that it’s becoming easy to consume Internet video on a TV brings into question many of the industry’s business models that developed before the web. the people in the industry “get it”. they are users. they read the blogs. they talk with users. they are trying to adjust to a new reality, but they need time.
users on the other hand, won’t wait. as we’ve seen over the past few weeks, users will take matters into their own hands to get the content they want. witnessing this, we’ve decided to enable access to their favorite content using a new built-in RSS reader optimized for video. like IE, Firefox, or Google reader, the RSS reader supports Google Video, Yahoo!, YouTube and feeds from many other websites. while it’s not as attractive or robust as our previous Hulu application, it will additionally support Hulu’s public RSS feeds.
the extended support for RSS is part of a new version of the boxee alpha. it includes two new features that are still under development:
* App Box - this is a first take at an application “store” that makes it easy for users to install new apps and plugins. there is also native support for 3rd party repositories, so you don’t have to rely on boxee as a gatekeeper for what goes into the official boxee app store. for example, you can add dir.boxeehq.com as a repository to get access to all the boxeehq.com apps.
* auto update - long time in the making and really bad form on our part for not having it from the beginning. but better later than never. no need to check on Twitter or our blog to know that there is a new version. now you’ll be prompted to update boxee whenever there is a new release ready.
this is a bleeding-edge release. not for the faint of heart since it did not go through much testing. we are on track to release a more stable update on March 24th.
if you’re in NYC on the 24th then you should come to the boxee meetup. we will release the new alpha version during the event and share some concrete plans for the beta.

You guys never cease to amaze me. I cannot wait to get home and try this out. Also real good work on the RSS reader that supports Hulu now. Good luck Hulu trying to stop this!!! A much thanks to all of team boxee for all the hard work you put into this application. Also another big thanks to boxeehq for all the plugins you guys have been throwing out. Now it will be even easier to get it to the users with the new app store.

- On my ATV, quitting boxee after installing this new version, then relaunching, no longer works with my existing boxee password. I have to log in to the boxee.tv web site and change my password, then relog in to boxee on my ATV.
- I added a hulu feed in the new App Box for http://www.hulu.com/feed/recent/shows. Boxee said it was successful, and the new feed shows up under video/internet. When I click it, I see hulu's list of new shows. But when I try to play one, Boxee tries to load it for a while, but the new boxee "loading" icon ultimately flashes red and says "Loading Failed".
Am I doing something wrong?

Must be double deja vu as Boxee had it way before that other media center.

I am assuming you are adding these through App Box/My Feeds, because I tried adding the hulu feeds there as well as trying to add them to my RSS feeds in my boxee account, but no matter where I put the feeds, they always say "Error Feed loading failed" or no feed found.

My private feeds (the queue feed I see when I’m logged into Hulu with the form http://www.hulu.com/feed/queue/username) works for now.

Hey,
First thanks for all the hard work you've done on really improving the appletv. It's turned it into a whole 'nother animal now.
Anyway. I tried out the latest release and am still unable to view hulu videos.
I've tried three different shows, rebooting after each attempt.
After selecting a show to watch -> Boxee Loading screen... -> hulu video enclosure appears for like 2sec -> black screen...
running appletv 2.3.0 and boxee 0.9.9.5324
::.. edit
when exiting to menu "Now Playing: ... " shows on top, alas no video

I couldn't find any instructions so I just made up my own:
1. If you already have boxee running on your ATV, go to the Downloads menu and select the new version of boxee and let the installer run.
2. If you don't already have boxee on your ATV, using your Mac or PC, create a patch stick from here: http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/
3. Run the patch stick on your ATV and reboot.
4. From the new launcher menu, go to Downloads and select the new version.

Watched an old I Spy without problems. Tried to watch a Fringe episode (04 I think) that just kept loading for over an hour with nothing ever playing. Then went to watch a live Twit TV video using the http://boxeehq.com/plugins/twit-video/ plugin. Found out the video is now shifted to the right about 1/6th.
What I really liked in the hulu now is the ability to jump down the alphabetical list using the links on the right. I don't believe that was available with the old hulu, right?

Hey thanks.
I tried to watch Paradise Hotel 2 (yeah, I know. my wife likes it so I tried it first), the office, daily show, dollhouse. All show the Boxee loading screen, the hulu video frame for 2sec then black.
Back at the main menu it will show what's playing in the "Now Playing" status message - but no video playing...
then tried a CBS show and CSI just stops at the first commercial break. previously didn't have luck with CBS so, no change. CBS shows would just stop at like 8-10 minutes in - no matter what show.
also, BBC shows don't play either. Some error like Content Currently Unavailable.
So, any insights would be helpful. I know you're all fighting battles on many fronts these days.
Know that your work is very appreciated and I hope all your efforts lead to Great Fortunes for all of you.

I just discovered that Boxee is really part of my life now, as I do not dare to update my AppleTVs to the newest version untill I know of the changes/known issues...
Any update on this ? Already had a hard time explaining my GF about non-playing DVDs and using XBMC when Boxee doesn't play them, but, if the test-version kills her Desperate Housewives (et al) access, I'm quite sure this it will kill it's high WAF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_acceptance_factor) as well...

about repositories... kind of hard to add one on the atv when the onscreen keyboard does not accept input from the remote - i have to reboot to get out. but i expected hang ups like this... so, is there a manual workaround? like some config file i can ssh to and edit? as always, very pleased with where this is going - it's so nice to see something going in the right direction, like letting me use someone else's plug-ins...

I just wanted to Thank the team at Boxee for making such a wonderful product. This is the cutting edge and future of television programming. I find myself discovering new content that would have gone unnoticed before. This software makes all the time and effort of creating my HTPC well worth it.
Boxee will undoubtedly take off like a rocket with it's first official release. I can't wait till the Windows version start going public beta.
Koudos to Boxee and XBMC for making this possible.
Bugs.

tried watching several shows on the Hulu feed tonight but none were a success. first tried "it's always sunny in philidelphia" but message came up saying it was only for viewers 17 yrs. of age or older. then watched a couple other shows (real housewives of new york & father knows best) but they both cut out about halfway through the second act (just a bit after the first commercial break). there was onscreen error message from hulu saying "we're sorry but this video is temporarily not available" (or something like that). i've got a helluva case of blue HuluBalls now!;)
i might try using a private hulu feed URL tomorrow (as suggested by another poster here) to see if i get any better results. guessing that should at least take care of the age restriction error i got.
also, ABC was not working at all, but i'm guessing you know that and pandora video feed crashed the boxee app on the two videos i tried to watch (submitted bug report).
thanks to avner and the whole boxee team for working so hard on this!
p.s. the iPhone boxee app is WAY COOL!

There is someone that is coming or passing away in your life around the clock, so you may lose sight of those seen, and forget those remembered. There is gain and loss in your life, so you may catch sight of those unseen, and remember those forgotten. Nevertheless, doesn’t the unseen exist for sure? Will the remembered remain forever?
