I just noticed something odd, on all my 1.85 or 2.35 movies i noticed small black bars to the left and right as well, I see no setting to change the aspect ration on the boxee, and the tv is set to normal, which will auto detect wide vs normal aspect ratio. When I set the tv to wide I loose MOST of the black bars to left and right, BUT when I am in the boxee menu I loose a little on the left anr right side until I take off wide mode on the tv, then the menu fill the screen perfectly. Is this a general issue with boxee right now?. I know it wasn't there before, so it must have come out in the last release?

you can use the "z" key on the other side of the remote to zoom and fill up the screen. will it work?

Is this a general issue with boxee right now?. Not likely.

I know it wasn't there before, so it must have come out in the last release?More likely you just need to adjust the overscan settings on the Boxee Box.

the overscan was spot on, needed no adjusting, as i mentioned the boxee menu system filled the screen perfectly, so I knew it had to do something with streaming from my home server. I did stumble across a screen size setting display and set it to 16:10..well..that seemed to work, the movies now fill up properly left to right...very odd since it is a 16:9 wide screen tv.

What brand TV do you have? If it's a Panasonic, user trooperlooper posted the following which may help?

"I have a Panny TV, you have to actually set it specifically to 16:9 ratio, not auto. As auto is screwed up on some types of inputs."

have a vizio 42" tv, the 16:10 ration coming from the boxee does "fix" the black bars left to right, but now the movie folder are little stretched up, The only settings I have are Normal, Wide, strech, and zoom on the tv..will look for another setting in the tv..going to bring my WD live tv downstairs to see if it does the same thing..if it does then I can rule out the tv at least

Vizio should be set to NORMAL. Boxee should be set to 16:9. Then adjust the overscan settings. Note that you may have to apply the TV's NORMAL setting to each input separately.

Also, try it with different movies to make sure there isn't one or more that might just be encoded with black in them for some odd reason.

yeah, have it set to normal, checked all other movies and from what I can see all of them, at least all i have checked, have bars left and right when on 16:9. Now, when i look at the overscan on 16:9 I see the angles are perfectly aligned with the edges of my tv. I figure thats the max I would want to push it, since it could shift the menu out of center....or does it only affect videos playing (I assume it affects everything, but I could be wrong)

ok, just got done testing the wd tvlive, no issues with black bars at all, every video played fine, so its something in the boxee box from this point, just dont know what.

If anyone experiences this problem I think I found the solution, complete factory reset, that resolved everything. before the reset I had the overscan at default and everything else factory set, so no idea what "glitch" came through, but the full reset resolved the issue. :D

Good to hear you got the problem solved, because the steps you were following were the correct way to set it up. On a Vizio set to normal, unless they've made changes to the way their input mapping works, you shouldn't even have to make any adjustments at all to Boxee's output/overscan settings.
