When you install Boxee (or XBMC) on an Apple TV what happens when you boot the device? Does it boot into Boxee or does it boot to a default dashboard?

For example, when I turn on my XBOX it boots right into XBMC and I go from there.

I'm considering buying an Apple TV now and while this is a small detail it really means a lot to me and I might not be ready to give up my aging XBOX just yet.

I did a quick search, but there's too many returns for the boot loader. So I apologize if this has been answered before.

When you install (read: hack) boxee onto the Apple TV it adds a menu item to the Apple TV in which you can select boxee (with the apple remote) and load it from there.

Boxee will stay running until you restart (unplug) the ATV or exit boxee, then normal ATV functions will return.

Does this answer your question?

The AppleTV boot just like it did before. The Launcher will show up as menu items

There is a method to boot directly into Boxee.app but certain things will need to be taken care of (watchdog). This is really an advanced topic that I don't want to get into right now until some issues are addressed.

I think that answers it, but let me clarify a few things...

When you say "restart (unplug)" does that mean Boxee will continue to run until Apple TV loses power? Meaning, does the device just go into a sleep mode? Or does it shutdown and when I go to watching something say in a few days I'd have to restart Boxee?

I'm sorry if that sounds confusing...

When you enter appletv you have the option to select boxee from the menu list..(similar to any mac machine selecting an application) you can exit the application at any time to return back to normal appletv...if you look at davilla post there is away to boot directly into boxee but this is a little advanced and will be addressed in the future...:)

There is no power switch on the ATV, I think you can force a restart by holding down "-" and "menu" for like 6 seconds, so when I said restart I really meant unplugging the power and plugging it back in.

The Apple TV stays running 24/7...it might go to sleep (can't remember) but that shouldn't affect boxee
