Hi,

I want to add media to my boxee but unfortunately it does not show the folders I need. I am using an external hard drive called 'Storage' and my media files are under /Storage/Users/(myusername)/Movies, etc. These folders do not show up. What can I do?

Best,
harrison

Hi harrisonp,
well - you have 2 options to play your media:
1. go to "video->My Video"
click on "options"
click on "sources" (the 4th option)
you should see your external HD as part of the list and you'll be able to browse it

2. add the external HD as a source.
from the home screen go to "settings"
go to "media sources"
hit "local sources" and then "add new source"
you should be able to add folders from your external HD as sources.

after adding the hd as a source it will automatically be scanned and metadata will be retrieved for its items. you will then see those items whenever you go into "my videos" (or "my music" or "my pictures" for that matter).

have fun.

I tried both these methods before I posted -- the folders simply do not show up as options to select in the program. I have tried using this external drive as an airport disk and through a physical connection. Only folders like usr, tmp, sbin, etc. show up, but 'Users' and 'Library' do not.

Update -- this is really odd! It seems that with an external drive, boxee will not show folders at the root level with any capital letters in the beginning -- i.e. 'Users' will not show up but 'users' will, 'Library' will not show up but 'library' will.

can you please check the permissions on those folders?

everyone can read & write -- those are the permissions.

how is the drive formatted? hfs+ or other?

Posting in this thread as it may be related and for general consolidation: I've gotten Boxee to accept two network sources (both Samba) but am unable to add local sources as it just says "No local devices found". Thoughts?

well, when you click "add source" it should present you with whatever is under /Volumes and with your home directory. maybe this setup for some reason doesnt work on your machine. weird.

fairly certain it's hfs+ but is running as an airport disk right now under appleshare so cannot confirm. will check later.

I'm running an Airport Extreme volume share (supporting Time Machine Backup too. :) Here's a link to my configuration: http://www.techtalkback.com/2008/03/time-machine-to-airport-extreme-router.html

Note that I also have the login for this "share" as part of my OS-X keychain, so I do not have to login or connect each time. This may be your issue - it's not caching the login info and therefore boxee cannot see the share because you are not logged in. This may be a security breach for you, but I like the auto-backups that time machine offers...
