Hi,

This is a really good news, boxee for appletv ;)
However, mine is already patched.
Is there a way to install boxee manually without creating a patchstick, etc ... ?

Thanks

If ssh is already installed, just grab the Boxee plugin from the google code source page and install like a normal AppleTV plugin.

Is there a way to manually install Boxee and XBMC onto a fresh install of the Apple TV? My drive is eSATA, so I can pull it, image it with 1.0.1, 2.0.2 or 2.1 ATV software using my Mac. From there, all I'd need to do is patch it from the Mac.

My biggest problem with this process is that I do not understand how it works. Is there a document online that details the process of installation (and patching, if necessary?).

TIA.

The 1st question is can you SSH into your ATV? If so the manual install is as easy as moving files around.

Easy way:installing boxee/xmbc on ATV that already has SSH

If you already have SSH just pull the XBMC and Boxee appliances out of the atvusb-creator file for the patchstick and copy them to the applications directory on your ATV. Run the update on each one and they work perfectly!!!

Path to find the apps in the atvusb-creator tar is: atvusb-creator\atvusb-creator.app\Contents\Resources\payloads\patchstick \plugins

copy them onto your ATV where your other plugins live in /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns

No, the patchstick failed (with the two USB thumb drives I have); but I can mount the drive on my Mac by USB, thus no need to to ssh for file transfer.

But how will they show up in the Back Row menu without it being patched?

BoxeeLauncher.frappliance and XBMCLauncher.frappliance are standard AppleTV plugins. Put them in the proper place and they will show up in FrontRow.

I'm trying to copy the BoxeeLauncher.frappliance to that folder and I get a permission denied warning - any ideas?

it means that you as user "frontrow" do not have permission to copy BoxeeLauncher.frappliance into that location. To get permission you need to elevate you permissions using sudo. Place the sudo in front of your copy command and entry the password "frontrow" when prompted.

OK, I've sorted it out. I had to install the frappliances according to Paul's instructions above, then install Boxee and XBMC Atlantis beta 2 onto my Mac. I then copied those over to the Applications folder on my ATV OSBoot partition and it seems to be working just fine (other than I cannot seem to locate the other volumes on my network).

I got the .frappliance.tar.gz from the atv-usb Google Code Source site, but I can't untar it on my computer, or on the atv.

via Terminal - ssh session:
-bash-2.05b$ tar -xzf ~/BoxeeLauncher.frappliance.tar.gz -C /staging/
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Read 8758 bytes from /Users/frontrow/BoxeeLauncher.frappliance.tar.gz
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Trying to run the install.sh doesn't return anything, even though I changed the code to reflect the fact that I have the tar.gz file directly in the ~ directory of atv.

From install.sh:
# check that staging directory exists
if [ -d "/staging" ]; then
echo " * installing ${PACKAGE}"

Anyways, help would be appreciated.

EDIT:::::
Got it! Instead of right click>save as on the
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/source/browse/trunk/atvusb-creator/payloads/patchstick/plugins/BoxeeLauncher/?r=20 page
I had to click the actual file and "View Raw File" from
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/source/browse/trunk/atvusb-creator/payloads/patchstick/plugins/BoxeeLauncher/BoxeeLauncher.frappliance.tar.gz?r=20
AWESOME.

I’m running ATV 2.3. I survived the upgrade to 2.3.. But now that new Boxee is out.... A few things happened.

latest Update didn’t seem to appear on update menu
XBMC/Boxee just up and disappeared from my menu

So I figured.. There must be a way to manually install this thing...
I cleaned out Boxee from my ATV.. Then..

So following your previous instructions for handling the update to 2.3.. I figured I’d do this on my ATV via SSH:
wget http://dl.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.5.4497.dmg
./alpha-0.9.5.4497_update.sh boxee-0.9.5.4497.dmg

That didn’t seem to work.. In fact when I specifically mount the dmg file and then run installer manually.. It tries to upgrade.. Which fails. (because theres nothing to upgrade).

Failure sucks. Do you have a manual install process...

Is this thread still active.

I copied over XBMCLauncher.frappliance and BoxeeLauncher.frapplicance to the correct places, rebooted AppleTV and I dont see a menu item.

I am running ATV 3.0.1

Thanks

I have tried using three different flash drives and I keep getting an error 404 or an error 8. I have a macbook pro and ATV 3.01. What can I do to get this to work?
