View Full Version : Sort "By Folder" in XBMC video and music library view mode

Request a "Sort By Folder" filter option in XBMC video and music library view mode.

This would work kind of like a 'virtual file-mode' while still within in XBMC library mode views. It would display all items in the video/music library but it would sort them by the original folder structure.

This way if the end-user have theirs files and folder sorted just the way he/she want to view them but still like to use XBMC library mode then they could choose to use this "Sort By Folder" filter to display at least a virtual folder structure representation of the end-end true directory hierarchy.

For example, the end-user has their video folders and files sorted by category like:
\Videos\Documentaries\BBC Specials\
\Videos\Documentaries\History Channel Stuff\
\Videos\Funny Clips\Animals\Cats\
\Videos\Funny Clips\Animals\Dogs\
\Videos\Funny Clips\Worlds Funniest Home Videos\
\Videos\Kids Favorite Cartoons\Tom and Jerry\
\Videos\Kids Favorite Cartoons\Scooby Doo\
\Videos\My Home Movies\Dad's 50th Birthday\
\Videos\My Home Movies\Spain Holiday 2007\

...and something similar for the music library.

Good or bad idea? :)

Sounds very useful.. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a certain style of movie/tv/music but I usually have to hunt around for something that fits the bill.

Tagging it manually seems like it would be pretty tedious and sorting it based on user's folders means you have to already know the category of the file (which means either looking it up or watching/listening to it). Chances are most people wouldn't bother, at the end of the day we're lazy creatures.

Would it be possible to pull this sort of information from IMDB (or a similar site) Genre field? I think that it would be easier and more accurate.

I'd also suggest that we have the ability to modify the file to join/remove it from certain genre listings. So if I have a file that shows up as being Horror (say Shaun of the Dead) but I know it's a comedy then I can edit the information to remove the Horror Genre category.

I'd like to have check boxes that show just the associated categories which can be unchecked.. To add files, a drop down box and an add button next to it. Click the drop down box and highlight the genre you want to associate and then hit the add button, then a new check box item appears next to the other category check boxes.

Maybe a combination of the two ideas (Gamester17's and my own)?

Note that I am only suggesting this as an optional filter, (and I for one would not like it to be the default filtering method).

Just to give the end-users more flexibility ;)

Sorting by Genre by awesome , be great to be able to just go to kids , comedy, thrillers , scifi etc

Also be nice if boxee could ignore Directories in the list, and also able to join part 1 and part2 files together for 2 part films , like sapphire for apple tv does.

Good stuff so far.
