Here's an interesting problem that I have not been able to find a solution for. MPEG formats play fine locally on boxee. But fail to load and run/spool from my server over my home network. All other formats spool and play just fine. Can any one explain this or offer a solution?

ffmpeg is a free encoder / decoder that can turn your mpg files into other formats that can then be spooled over your server.
Or mencoder works too.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with your problem.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I just got Boxee working on a fresh Ubuntu 8.10 (32-bit) install and I'm running into what seems like the same problem.
I have AVI and MPG files on a NAS server mounted to the local machine at /nas/movies. The AVI files play just fine in Boxee, but if I select an MPG file to play, the loading icon just sits and spins and my movie never comes up. Worse still I can't get out of that screen except by killing the Boxee process.
The majority of my collection is MPG and that's my preferred container, so if this behavior isn't fixed eventually, it'll be back to MythTV (which plays them fine with mplayer) or possibly XBMC alone if it uses a different player from Boxee.
Thanks for any tips / suggestions!
