View Full Version : Hulu, SSH tunnels and proxies

Has anyone successfully, from outside the US, been able to configure Boxee for viewing Hulu on their Mac using a ssh tunnel?

I have a server in the US that works fine in other scenarios. I create an SSH tunnel on the Mac to port 8080 and confirm that works fine when in Firefox (proxying to 127.0.0.1:8080). However, in Boxee, I just can't seem to get it working. I have tried setting the System proxy for SOCKS5 using the localhost:8080 settings, but it still shows the geo restrict in Boxee. Boxee's own proxy settings lock boxee up if they're set to localhost:8080, so that won't work for me.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this based on their successes? I can't find a logical reason why it's not working when set as the system proxy. Do I need to block port 80 somehow as well?

I believe that's because it doesn't go through the normal XBMC connection, it uses Flash I think? When I tried something similar on Windows, there was an app (Sockify maybe?) that fed all the TCP requests from any app over a proxy... I'm not aware of anything similar for the mac, but I haven't looked. You could set up a VPN, but that can be a bit of a nightmare.

You could always install OpenVPN on your U.S. server and issue credentials for your client or alternatively subscribe to a VPN SSL service with U.S. IP.

I have been able to access Hulu and all the other U.S. content using a VPN.

All the best.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm hoping to avoid HotSpotShield since I dislike the overhead it puts on via the app and it seems junky.

I was also hoping to avoid a VPN and just do it over ssh, since that's the most reasonable solution I can find. However, I will try OpenVPN if I can't configure with SSH. I assumed someone had gotten it right over SSH though.
