To all those wondering why you need BMM installed on your computer as a service to send your media from your NAS to your ipad, you dont.
Get AcePlayer (full version is FREE at the moment on appstore).
It can grab files from any DNLA server and transcode them on the fly within the app itself on the ipad. No service to run on a PC.

I'll post a plug for the Plex iOS app. $4.99 and worth every penny.
It's a FULL Plex client -- will connect to multiple Plex servers locally or remotely; full access to compatible plugins (!); includes cover art and episode info; complete sorting options (all, unwatched, recently aired, recently added, recently viewed eps, recently view shows, on deck, by collection, genre, year or folder); includes your music sources, cover art (no playlists though, I don't think); complete remote (LAN); etc.
Oh, and there's a setting to stream x.264/mkv files to iOS devices without transcoding.
Put your Plex Media Server on a sufficiently robust machine and serve up all your content your friends (for free on a desktop or for $4.99 on an iOS device).
