Ronald your are correct that some posts have gone off the topic of bugs in the firmware but i am hardly the first or the last person guilty of that in here.
People are pissed and rightly so and there venting which is a perfectly understandable reaction.
Its not helping matters much that boxee using people as tester rather then doing their own work or pushing out beta firmware to meet a new products deadline.

I totally agree, testing is not being done as it should. But this is also not really firmware. It's a Linux ISO (right?), so there is an OS with a bajillion settings. Yes they should be testing their code for functionality in their code, but they are never going to be able to test and ensure something like movie streaming works from every PC/OS/NAS out there running every version of OS/Firmware/etc.
They should test and they should test with as many platforms as they can. But they would be doing themselves and us both a favor if they also give us recommended platforms/OS's that they know work and also give us access to some of the OS settings so we can come up with solutions. For example, NFS does not perform well for me on any Boxee version with my NAS. But if I had access to the NFS client settings I am pretty sure I could resolve it, probably SMB too. And post the solution for all other users who have a SPARC based ReadyNAS. That's the point of a forum, a place where users can support each other. But doing it with a closed platform and few tweakable settings makes that pretty much impossible. That's why all the solutions around here collapse to, "works for me" or "I have that problem too" or "check your network".
The problem is there not even doing the basics.
Basic tests of the firmware functions would have showed the identification bug or the subtitle bug.
Very easy to test and find as so many here found out but it clearly wasn't tested at all.
If even the basics aren't being tested like they should it doesn't bode well for the larger issues like hardware compatibility.
I do wonder how much is do to bad practices and how much is does to mismanagement.

You are probably disregarding the fact that he may have been assigned other tasks as part of his work, which we know next to nothing about, and has only had limited time to also scan some of our posts here (which are not few in number, when you include all threads).
Whatever, let us not criticize him for taking the time now, even though we all wish he could have done it sooner. Even so, better now than never...!
You can always do what I did last night, which is to reinstall 1.5.0.23615 from USB, using the recovery menu.
That version doesn't have the ID linking bug, and since you're only switching between two v1.5 variants there's no need for 'Factory Restore' or any other complications.
It doesn't take very long to do, and you can always switch back afterwards by the same method (after updating your list with new episodes), in case you need any of the latest beta improvements. As for myself, I'll probably stay on the 'stable' version until a new version is released (beta or not), as I think I've made enough tests with currently available betas.
Best regards: Ronald
Good point on the marcel bit, its just that marcel seems to be the most active on here so of everyone I'd have thought he would have seen it enough already.
Switching versions seems like a lot of hassle, I'll just keep auto scanning and going into unidentified for now. I'm sure it won't be long until another update or bug fix lands... I'm just glad we no longer have the ear shattering audio bug on this version.

One more thing regarding issues with the beta this post is about... In general, it's expected there may be bugs in a beta... Just another thing to consider...

Ronald your are correct that some posts have gone off the topic of bugs in the firmware but i am hardly the first or the last person guilty of that in here.
I know and I agree. If I had waited a little bit before making that post I would also have said the same thing to many of the authors of the flurry of off-topic posts that appeared shortly thereafter, but by then I had logged off for a time.
People are pissed and rightly so and there venting which is a perfectly understandable reaction.
Yes, indeed!
But this thread is still not a good place for such venting, because here it interferes with the proper feedback on this firmware, which is particularly sad when we were finally on the verge of getting a straight dialog with one of the debugging developers about the currently worst bug. Hopefully that will still come to pass, though.
It's so easy to open a new thread to deal with other topics, where they won't interfere with discussion of the specific bugs in this firmware version, so I just wish more people would do so.
Its not helping matters much that boxee using people as tester rather then doing their own work or pushing out beta firmware to meet a new products deadline.
That is part of the overall problem, I agree. But the guys from team Boxee whom we meet here are probably not responsible for that decision.
They are the understaffed coders trying to do the job with too little help hired by management, as I see it. Though they might not say so, they probably agree with some of the arguments you and others have brought up.
But regardless of that, and regardless how much better the development and debugging could be organized with a different management policy, we still have to cope as best we can with the situation at hand.
And that is best done by trying to work together, users and team Boxee members alike, in clarifying all bugs so they can be fixed. While it really shouldn't be our job to do this (meaning us users), I for one am willing to do a part of it, and I'm sure many other users are too, as long as there is some response from the Boxee team. (Like the recent participation of marcel, hopefully to be continued...)
Best regards: Ronald

Only black screen when turning on. I have been using Boxee Box without problem with 1.5.1.23679 (7th Feb).
But now when I turn on, only black screen appear. I use same HDMI cable that came with the unit and I used another one.
When I turn on, I noticed that something happen in the TV as it detects the signal. But nothing else happen.
I try going to factory reset. The logo is yellow, but nothing appear in the screen.
Is there any hard reset I can do my myself?

Your correct Ronald in all fairness the guys here are likely not the ones making the decisions.
Still they are also not totally without blame as someone there needs to put there foot down and say this is wrong.
Its not just one thing wrong there but many things adding up to the wrong goals and firmware thats not ready being pushed out to meet those goals.
I also totally agree its easy to start new threads but the posts aren't unsurprising at this stage.
Boxee delivered so many lack luster firmwares and broken promises people have reached a point where its starting to boil over.

Hi, just bought my Boxee. Installation and updating to the latest official firmware went smoothly. Rather impressed with the way Boxee recognized my videos, sorted them and found covers from my usb, although the scanning process was quiet slow.
Anyway to my problem. Sometimes the sounds is really crappy, distorted and/or jumps in volume. I think it is the bug mentioned here:
Bug 11566 (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-11566)
However, this nearly lead to a murder last night when I (or say the boxee) cranked the volume to standing-at-a-heavy-metal-concert-right-in-front-of-the-speakers with my girlfriend sleeping beside me. She was *NOT* amused.
TL;DR: Does this beta fix the problem? If not, what is the last version where this bug was not presence? It makes the use of my boxee like playing russian roulette, which I don't think i acceptable...

Holy cow!!! That's exactly what happened to my boxee box!! I flashed it to this update, then reset settings. Last thing I did was set EDID, which caused a reboot, and then black screen and no audio. Try to get into recovery, it's yellow like it should be, but screen is black. Turn it on regularly, and it is black while light is green. I rma'd it back, because I didn't see anyone else with this problem, and just figured I got a bad box.

I hope I wil be able to RMA from Argentina. I tried everything what I read in the forum:
The thing is that I did not changed anything.
Just to give you more information:
. LCD LG Scarlet II
. 1080p resolution
. No sound
. I tried to factory reset. Go to yellow logo but I cannot see the menu to navigate. I navigate blind to choose Factory reset and nothing happend. (Press one time down cursor, and then move left and press enter. Also I tried Press one time down cursor and then move down and press enter. I do not remember whether there is a confirmation windows.
. I press 20 sec to get the red logo, and then reset and nothing. Still black screen.
. I changed another hdmi input on the same LCD, and I swith the cable too.
. I did all the combination to turn off/on the TV, Boxee. And nothing happened. Still black.
. When the unit worked, I had sound configuration to all output. (HDMI with sound and digital interfase SPDIF). So when I turn on, the sound can be heared in the LCD and in the audio equipment ). NOW, If I turn on, even though logo get green, the opening sound does not come from the digital audio.
Then I thought, if I will die someday, why boxee won't....also...why not boxee first... I will laugh instead of crying...

Hi folks,
This version of firmware seems to have stopped any video freezing or buffering which has been plagued for all releases prior to this series, however I find that the problem has now changed to Audio dropouts randomly throughout any movie, or any format of movie, ie: avi, or mp4, or whatever.
Any plans that this issue will be addressed, acknowledged, or seen to ?

Since the first beta update I have a couple Unidentified Files (TV shows) when I do identify them nothing happens they still remain Unidentified Files.
This is new and has never happened before. I've had to identify these two files before without a problem.

Hi.
I'm having problems with buffering all the time.Runs for about 10 seconds
then it has to buffer again. This is while playing a 720p DTS mkv file.
It's the same problem with all files.
Tried to do a factory reset, then upgrading firmware, but still the same.
I'm also having audio dropouts on DTS-HD audio files.Tried regular DTS
audio over both HDMI and Toslink but without change...still the same.
Very irritating that these audio dropouts can't be fixed, when it
obviously is a very common problem.
I like my Boxee very much, but it's almost unusable because i have the
to watch movies with constant audio dropouts.
Hope the Boxee Team comes up with a firmware that solves the problem.
I also have a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player that plays all of the
files flawlessly and without audio dropouts.
Come on D-Link.Embarrasing i must say.
UPDATE February 19: My Boxee doesn't freeze when i use an external USB 2.0 HDD connected to it :)

Can't or wont be fixed.
What is it that's so hard to fix.It have worked before on my boxee.
the problem is the update feature in the Boxee Box.You cannot say no to upgrades
and then you suddenly end up with a firmware that's s**t.
WD makes a product that works flawlessly.
It should not be THAT difficult.

By manual. I have two boxee boxes - neither of them will manually identify TV shows, I'm not sure if the same thing happens for movies

The Manual Identifying option for TV shows is goofed on this firmware version. You either need to revert back to a previous version or wait for them to fix it in the next update. Which with the speed they've been coming lately probably won't be long.

The Manual Identifying option for TV shows is goofed on this firmware version. You either need to revert back to a previous version or wait for them to fix it in the next update. Which with the speed they've been coming lately probably won't be long.
To be more specific, the "Manual Identify Bug" is present in both of the two latest beta versions, but NOT in the preceding stable version, which is v1.5.0.23615.
So to get rid of this bug, as needed to identify such TV episodes, you just need to reinstall v1.5 from the recovery menu. And you can also use the same method to go back to your preferred beta version if you like, after performing the needed identifications.
Since these reinstalls concern only a switch between different v1.5 variants, you should not need to bother with 'Factory Restore' at all, since that's only needed when switching between versions with major difference in database structures (forcing you to 'kill' the old database first).
But for closely related versions, like these v1.5 variants, you simply use the recovery menu to re-install, with the entire database unaffected by it.
Btw:
If you haven't already added your own vote for the fixing of this bug, you can do it by voting for its JIRA ticket reached through this link (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-12533).
Best regards: Ronald

So a weird behavoir I noticed after watching a TV marathon for about 5 hrs or so, sound drops out. Got error message invalid audio to check my settings. I had to reboot the boxee box to get audio back.
TueChristensen
February 20th, 2012, 01:57 AM
Just a quick question. Since the distorted sound is not still fixed, but the JIRA ticket is closed, does this mean a new ticket should be opened? Or do we just wait?
I found something strange (as I posted elsewhere in the forum). When the sound gets distorted I can turn the volume one click down and then the sound is normal again. Two clicks down and it is distorted. Three clicks and it is normal, etc. Sometimes, however, the sound drops completely and nothing but a reboot can bring it back.
magnus33
February 20th, 2012, 07:29 AM
Its a wait and see kind of thing.
Unfortunately boxee up to this point has terrible testing practices for the firmware.
This leads to bugs that should have never every gotten into the open being seen and the fix one thing add five new bugs habit.
Hopefully they start testing like they should and that stops.
Of course this is likely going to mean longer waits before firmwares but those firmwares should be much less a pain then they are now.

What are the errors in this firmware version? I'm getting frikkin annoyerd with not having the CC-option and can't live without subtitles on some of the stuff I watch. I'm guessing, as with any Boxee firmware, even though one bug is fixed, 500 other ones are simultaneously created.. so, can anyone tell me what the current errors are in this one so i know if its worth it to upgrade?

any of you guys noticed weirdness after pausing of streamed content?
If, say on a large film file - you pause and go to the loo - when you un-pause, the film plays for a moment, then buffers... this is fine, but when it resumes playback, the video speeds up and skips forward. Its almost as if the films is still playing whilst it freezes and buffers - then catches up once finished buffering. So you totally miss some of the film and have to rewind
Just noticed how out of date the word "rewind" is ... we dont really wind anything do we :)

Is anyone having this issue with NetFlix, it's driving me insane already....
When watching netflix and let's say you have a phone call or need to get up for a sec. You pause the movie your watching. Well... After about 30+ secs, Boxee will reboot and say something about the audio settings not initialized. Then it goes to the home page and you are not able to do anything. You have to manually go to the device and reboot by the power button.
When it happened at first I thought it may have been scanning media on the background but now I don't have any media scanning in the background and this damn problem persists.
Has anyone else have this problem and is there a way around it for now?

Since the 1.5 update; I love the interface been having some issues with speed, it's not longer snappy like it used to be. Understandably I guess since the UI is alot nicer.
I am downloading and about to flash this since after troubleshooting my LIVE TV that I just got today after waiting for the back order; is giving me the scan reset scan never loads the live tv app. I opened a ticket / missing some info please ask if need, SN etc.
I am going to flash this right now hoping to get live tv working just don't want more problems.
I CAN correct me if I'm wrong, just factory reset if I do not like this FW and just update online to 1.5 again correct?

I have the same problem, sudden loss of picture while watching netflix, doesn't have to be on pause, the box restarts and an orange text box in the right corner appear with the text "Couldn't initialize audio..."
Remote stops responding and the box keeps rebooting to homescreen, until you cut the power. This happens so frequently that i'm considering dropping my netflix account and just use vudu.

After using this version for a couple of weeks I must say that tough it is a step forwards there are still some truly annoying "bugs" in this one:
1) The browser is very unstable and when it fails it usually takes a reboot to get browsing functionality back. I know there is trouble brewing when the browser starts rendering page elements incorrectly (text gets messed up, black spots start appearing on the page, responsiveness goes down).
2) When starting playback of video (online and offline) the video most of the times takes up to 5 seconds to appear while the audio is instantly available. I know a lot of people hated the audio version of this bug (where video would start instantly but audio would start later), but this one is equally annoying.
3) If I let a video play all the way to the end, the screen remains black for at least 20 seconds after the video is finished. The box is unresponsive to the remote control during that time.
4) When early exiting a local video file (to avoid issue 3) the box returns to the files list screen (I use the files screen predominantly with local USB content) but the screen is empty except for the side menus. I takes several seconds or pressing the back button in order to refresh the contents of the list and in case of using the back button I'm one directory up from where I was when I started playback.
If Boxee could fix these issues in a future firmware update I would be very happy. Of course fixing the other major issues would be welcomed as well :)

when I try to watch live football with airplay from either Ipad or Iphone4 the boxee just freeze, and I have to hold the power-button to restart.
Updated with the beta.

all subtitles even the ones that say "sync" will get more and more out of sync. Seems like the ratio on the subtitles is off.

Can the programmers who visit the Forum give any type of idea when the next beta release will be out (Specifically to fix the problem of not being able to add tv shows). I know before darlicious psot the typical "we dont announce releases etc etc " thats why I am asking the programmers who come on directly for a guess a hope of wehn it will be fixed.
Right now you have us stuck in the catch 22 of having to choose between the lesser of two evils
1) You can have subtitles but no ability to add tv shows
2) You can add TV shows but have no ability to browse for subtitles.
I find myself constantly bouncing between firmwares to add content to TV shows and then back to get subtitles. Quite annoying.

Personally I choose #2 and use Ember to grab subtitles if I need them.

Perhaps they could fix one vital thing without breaking another vital feature, just a thought. honestly the best beta release with the fewest critical issues seemed to be the one right before the public push, since then theres been big issues.

Thanks, I have just gotten into using Ember to create custom NFO files for movies the boxee doesnt identify. I am playing with it some now and see it tells me whether my movie has subtitles or not but how do i get it to get them?

Add it as something you want to scrape for in the options.
IE, I changed my options to pull in the poser and name is as folder.jpg, I manually pic whatever fan art I want, etc.
I manually do the subtitles for select movies - like Super Troopers. I'll try to remember to post a screen shot when I get home.

You kidding? You/We do not want to rush them! We need to make sure the next one is properly tested and working prior to releasing. Otherwise, we'll have another thread like this consisting of nothing but complaints. I'd personally rather them take their time, and have a proper release out.

You think bigger and fewer releases are less error prone than more and smaller releases ?
You sure dont have any track-record from boxee showing that.
On the contrary my dear Watson

LOL, great point buddy! And, I'd love/do agree. However, I believe after this last FW release, they may be getting tired of all the complaints. With that said... I doubt it matters how long/few vs. short/simple the fixes may be... people will always have something to complain about.
Trust me, I have plenty to complain about. However, I feel it is pretty much useless now as I am sure the power users, admins, and mods are pretty much tired of hearing me complain (I'm sure as hell tired of complaining). I just read everyone else's complaints as I know I am not the only one, and just await for the replies as to perhaps be able to fix my own problems.
All good buddy. You and I in same boat man. :)

I agree with savenlid: I think it is time for a new beta.
I'm not asking for a new general release, just a new beta that people can try out at their own risk and which we can test to see if any of the major (easily solvable) bugs have been fixed.
That is the purpose of beta releases: wider testing of intended general releases so that bugs can be found before they affect everybody who gets a new general release.

Hey, nobody disagreeing with you in here man. Just HOPING for some/most of long term issues would be/could be resolved for each release. ;)
