I just got a Boxee Box for Christmas, and I'm in the process of setting it up. Everything seemed to go fine, until I tried to set up my network shares. I navigate to Windows Network (SMB) and find my computer name in there, but when I add it and scan it, it finds absolutely nothing.

I can explore the shared computer to some extent. I can see the users, minus the admin one I use, but even if I place files in here, the BB can't see it at all.

The computer that should be sharing the content is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have an SSD that is apparently being read (minus the admin account) and there is a 1.5TB storage drive that has all my movies and TV shows on it, but I can't get to any of it.

Can anyone please help me?

What are you adding, exactly? A folder?

Are your files named properly? http://boxee.zendesk.com/entries/42693-correctly-naming-local-media-files

What are the file extensions on these files?

Last but not least, are you saying that you can navigate (via Files>>Network>>SMB>>COMPUTER) to a folder that has video files but the folder appears empty?

I'm trying to add folders. On the Storage Drive, I have a Movies folder, a TV Shows Folder, and a Music Folder. I can't get to the storage drive at all, however.

In the folder I CAN get to, I threw in an episode of community, and named it Community.S03E10. It's an H264 file, and it won't show up when I point the Boxee to the folder.

I'm not sure I'm following on your navigation question. When I go to File -> Network I don't see an SMB option... I have my computer name, a linux router, and a Media Device with the same name as my computer. If I navigate into [computer name], I can find the movies I want to share.

...I hope I didn't just confuse things.

Are you running the latest firmware?

What is the version number here: Settings>>System>>Information

It says: 1.2.2.20482-64560cd

It should be up to date, as I did update it yesterday.

Is this "storage drive" a NAS or connected to a computer or ??

And sorry, I should have said Files>>Browse>>Windows Network (SMB)

The storage drive is an internal drive in my computer.

I tried browsing to the computer through the boxee file browser, and found my Community File. It's an MKV and it plays, but when I scan the folder it still tells me it found nothing. Also, I still can't browse to the storage drive at all.

You need to make sure it's shared. By default Windows will not make all drives available for browsing/access over the network.

How is the file named that won't be scanned?

Hold on, I am making some progress here. The folders that I'm trying to share (on my storage drive) are actually showing up now, but still with nothing inside. For instance, I created a folder called "Boxee" and now it's showing up. However, if I put folders containing movies inside, the folders don't show up...

The file that was named before and wasn't scanned was called Community.SE03E10.mkv. I don't know why it won't show up, but at least it played.

Okay, progress IS being made. I managed to get the storage drive to be shared, and now I can browse it. Do I have to go in to each individual folder inside and share each one as well? Even new ones? They still don't show up at all, and I'm not sure why.

Edit: Problem solved! It turns out I did have to share each folder within the storage drive. Now it's picking up my movies and TV shows, and it's even got the database stuff in there as well. Thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction. =)

Hi Nick:

You should probably see how you're connected to your home-router. It almost sounds like it's behaving like a "Work" Network.

Click Start -> Type in "Network and Sharing Center" in the Search/Find Bar -> Open N&S Center and see if your Network Location says Home, Work, or Public.
If it doesn't say Home - You know what to do.

Take this opportunity to also click "Change Advanced Network Settings" on the L/H Side of the Network and Sharing Center menu and go through the options in here to make sure they're setup as you want.

Enjoy!
