It keeps telling me recommendations failed to load. Is there something I've borked? Is it my web filter? Does it Blend?

I use a custom host file, PeerGarudian (Moblock), a (local) firewall, and a NAT router with no problem.

How long have you had Boxee? Chances are no one has recommended anything to you, yet.

If you want, add me (agentlame) and I'll recommend something to you as a test.

(Recommendations are social, not generated)

Thanks please do... however should it say "failed to load..." if there are none? If nothing else, it's a bad status message - should say "you have no..."

I recommended "A History of Violence"

As far as the message, it does sound poorly phrased, if that is the case. Sounds like it's a generic "catch all" for the list just being empty.
It's been awhile since I installed Boxee, so I don't recall what it said.

My thinking is that if 'Friends Activity' works, so should 'Recommendations'.

Yep, that did it...

So, just for closure, seems like the state where you have none could be reported differently... not like its an error
