My main interest in boxee is the ability to browse my netflix subscription. I don't see anywhere to add my netflix account on the windows version of Boxee (the only version I have used). Has this not yet been added ?

Netflix doesn't appear to be available in the Windows version yet.
Btw, you can set up your Netflix account by logging into your account at the Boxee website. However, support for watching Netfix content doesn't appear to be in the Windows version yet.

Team Boxee has not specified a date; however, they have said it WILL happen at some point. The bonus on windows is that you still have the option to go to Netflix outside of Boxee (for now).

I'm sure it's coming--this is still alpha software remember.

I am using Boxee to watch Netflix on Windows using themediamall.com's playon uPnP media server. It is not free ($30) but it streams netflix to Boxee just fine. You can install it on the same machine as Boxee if you want or stream over an internal network if you have a server somewhere. It also streams Hulu and several other online sources. Sadly, I still cannot fast forward to the middle of a movie I watched only part of.

They have a 14 day trial so you can see how it works for free.

Thanks for the replies, I am super loving this software. It is amazing! I am not complaining about Netflix not being added yet I understand that this is alpha SW just really anxious to get my media pc completed.

I also accidentally opted in for the Netflix silverlight version so I am anticipating if that will work, but I do not see why not since that is what is being used on mac. Anyone have any comments on Netflix built in versus silverlight?

boxee on both mac and windows will use silverlight... the team has not yet implement a silverlight wrapper to bxflplayer-win32; without it, boxee will not support silverlight, regardless of what you do.

I am using Boxee to watch Netflix on Windows using themediamall.com's playon uPnP me.

Out of curiosity, why would you do that? Why not just stream netflix through a browser? I dont understand why you'd pay $30 for something that is free as a standalone, unless you are using it for other reasons as well.

Because the 10 foot interface on my browser sucks.

So you're using PlayOn with Boxee for Windows? Hmm, I thought PlayOn was more of a Boxee competitor vs. an add-on.

as soon as humanly possible. :)

the team plans on getting it working on the appletv, then windows is to follow.

What's weird is I had a Netflix icon in the Windows Boxee Alpha. The feature may have been removed when I installed the latest build, but I'm not certain. I signed up for a Netflix Trial today to test it out and couldn't find the icon anywhere. Bummer!

No, not at all. PlayOn is a uPnP media server with no display capabilities. Boxee is a media player - with future Netflix streaming capabilities. If Boxee Windows could play Netflix you would not need PlayOn, but until then if I want to use Boxee and see my Netflix movies I do not have much choice (other than to use a full keyboard mouse interface on the computer connected to my tv).

There are other reasons you might want to use PlayOn. It transcodes which is not much of an issue unless your boxee machine is underpowered.

I am not one to tell them how to do it...but it seems like it should be allot easier to get it working on the windows version than on apple tv, I've heard allot of compatibility issues with apple tv. I also can't wait for ABC on windows boxee. For the first time in my life I am a little jealous of mac.

A little bit off the topic but I noticed in this thread some discussion about silverlight. I subscribe to a website that, for a fee, makes complete rugby games available for download. Up until last year they were windows only because of DRM protection on their files. Now they are redesigning their site and their content will play on osx and windows. So I assume that they are converting over to Silverlight. Do I understand correctly that silverlight does not yet work on Boxee? When they release a Boxee version with silverlight support, will I be able to watch my rugby with Boxee too or will there be an issue with DRM?

PS: I just thought I'd let you guys know that the iPhone app "Air Mouse" works perfectly with Boxee on windows. Thanks for a great product already.

not without someone writing a plugin to support that site.

boxee has flash support, but you still need to write a proper plugin for flash each site.

Thanks for the reply. I can download the files on my mac in my studio but will I be able to play the files on my TV without exiting Boxee? Thanks for bringing up flash because my next question is what files can I play through Boxee. AVI, MOV, WMV, flash, divx,... Do I need to install players for each format or does Boxee have them built in?

I wish boxee would put updates as to what they are currently working on. I just got netflix to work on windows media center using the silverlight player. Why is it seem so difficult to get onto boxee? Not complaining just wondering?

I know that Silverlight can prove a challenge with development right now. I'm really curious about eventual Extender support for Boxee. There's a lad, Eric Luttman, who developed a plugin for Windows Media Center called vmcNetflix (http://myweb.cableone.net/eluttmann04/projects/vmcNetFlix/default.htm). He has released all of the source on Google. I still have the original Netflix player, so it allows the use of Netflix on Extenders but, he has added some functionality to allow the use of a web-based route for the Silverlight player. Just thought that some of his research may prove useful.

Luttman's plug-in does not support the Silverlight stream on extenders, even the web player. It's totally at odds with the trick he's doing to get extenders to work, which is simply passing them a format they already know - windows media. extenders don't know anything about silverlight and have no easy way to acquire the plugin.

xev1n
February 3rd, 2009, 08:33 AM
seems like they would just release it "non extender" then add that later. I bet there are allot of people who have PC connected directly to tv not using extenders.

deaconvena
February 3rd, 2009, 09:02 AM
Luttman makes the Silverlight player work by doing nothing about it. He's just opening a web view of the page you'd be looking at in a browser. That means you can't go full screen, and you can't use a remote to control the video.

2 new apps have been available/added since I have been running boxee, not sure why netflix can't be one of them? By the way I love boxee and am not complaining just anxious. :)
