View Full Version : Boxee Remote acting CRAZY!

I scroll my movies and music and tap down once on the navigation pad of the remote and it generates 5-10 more taps on it's own. So I usually end up passing what I want by a mile. Sometimes it works, but majority of the time, I'm hitting buttons on the remote and it seems to want to go by or select what I am trying to do way more than just 1 time. Is the battery almost dead, or do I need a new remote, or what? I'm lost! I can honestly tell you there has been nothing spilled on the remote or anything. The buttons are not sticking at all or anything.

I think you need a new battery.

If you have more than one boxee box, you also need to pair your remotes.

You wouldn't think this would be the behavior of a dying battery but it is. I experienced the same thing and replaced my battery a few days ago and all is well. The Boxee box remote batteries can be purchased anywhere for a few bucks.

I went through this also with my brand new boxee. (new battery tried no fix)
After several hours reading same issues I tried putting a small folded piece of paper behind the battery to give it better contact....problem solved.
The battery tray in the remote doesn't press the battery against the contacts hard enough.

My Boxee Remote was acting crazy with repeating letters also. The replacement of its battery fixed it completely. My boxee was coming up on 1 yr of age so apparently that is how long the batter lasts.

If this isn't already this should be put on an faq as it goes against what most people would expect. If a traditional tv remote battery dies or isn't connected properly the tv will just not register the remote presses or only work 1 out of every couple presses.
Knowing that this is normal behavior for a dying or improperly connected battery in a boxee remote really helps.
Coming up around a year my remote started doing this with repeated presses so I ended up sending the whole boxee box in for warranty repair thinking the remote just broke. Now a few months later I started having the same problem and looked in this thread and find its a battery issue. I reseated the battery and blew into the remote for good measure and now the remote is working fine.

the reason for this "duplicate button press" issue with the dying battery is that the boxee remote sends out two different signals when you press a button - one indicating a good battery level + the key you pressed... one indicating a low battery + the key you pressed . This is so the boxee UI can show the Low battery Indicator on the main menu.
The problem is that when the battery is on the border between OK and LOW, the remote goes mental and sends out BOTH signals when you push a button - boxee then recieves the key you pressed signal many times.

If a traditional tv remote battery dies or isn't connected properly the tv will just not register the remote presses or only work 1 out of every couple presses. On the other hand, my harmony remote is the same way as the Boxee remote -- I suddenly start getting multiple actions with a single button press...

I had a feeling it was in there but thought I'd mention it just in case. Looked over that faq before but not in a while.
I guess the fancier remotes do that when battery is dying while older style remotes don't.

After spending half an hour unsuccessfully with telephone tech support and then being referred to this site my remote problem was solved in a couple of minutes thanks to this thread. The only thing I would add is that in Canada the CR2032 battery used in the Boxee Box remote can be purchased at Dollarama at 3/$1. (or at FutureShop/Best Buy for 2/$12.99).

Yup - same thing happened to me & it was a dying battery...
Although, lets see how long your Dollarama battery lasts. I went with Zellers - 2/$6.
