View Full Version : Codec Issue? RED Layer over Playback
SocalRichard
September 16th, 2008, 04:28 PM
Hey everyone,
I'm apart of the community as of today... and I'm happy that I was able to get in!
Alright, I downloaded and installed. Went through my music/movies and ensured that everything was labeled correctly and adjusted settings (such as the region I'm in,etc).
Here's my issue: Whenever I play a video (streaming, or local media which are mainly .avi) the playback is dimmed/darker and has a layer of red over it. Did I miss something during configuration? Does anyone else have this problem?
P.S.
The outcome didn't change by adjusting any settings. It reacted the same as default install. I'm running 24 Inch Intel Duo Core Imac from August of 2006...Mac OS X 10.4.11.
Any help would be appreciated and I'm sorry if this is a dupe.(I tried searching roughly but I didn't find anything)
Thank You in advance,
- Richard

Just for the sake of completeness, did you create the file in:
~/.boxee/UserData/advancedsettings.xml
or
~/Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/advancedsettings.xml
The instructions are for Linux, but the location is different on Mac.

From the get go I knew the directions were for Linux because that's where the thread was placed in.
I went ahead and went through the second route.

Thank you. To visibly grasp the issue I'm having, here's a looksy.

Sometimes during the beginning of movies, it's entirely green such as this...
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u202/sckixowd/Boxee/Picture1.png
Once the media does play through, everything is masked in red.
As you can tell in addition to the layered mask of red over the frames, everything seems dark and dimmed.
I'll PM you my computer info, too. (It might help determine if it's a hardware capability issue)

Just wanted to chime in to say that I'm experiencing the same problem, although my video is purple-tinted. I'm running Tiger with a Radeon X1600. I tried out XBMC a month or so ago and the video issue is exactly the same there. From what I have seen, the villain is the ATI card. I can provide logs if necessary. Oh, I took a screenshot of Futurama playing in XBMC and put it on my Flickr page. Here's a link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bunkster/2828642985/).

Ah, why thank you generously. I'm rather excited...:p

And yes, that's rather weird why it's not working. I'm going to try it out on this computer (my laptop) running 10.6. Hopefully I'll be able to have it running flawlessly! We'll see...
Thanks for all of your assistance in the mean time. The BOXEE Team are dedicated none the less and your efforts are apparent.

I'm on a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.4.11. The UI for boxee looks great until I start a video. All streaming video is barely visible behind a purple haze.

I just downloaded the latest version today and am experiencing this same problem. It looks like only a single colour channel is coming through. First couple of seconds is green, then it switches to red. Dark muddy. Unwatchable. :(
My output is looking like the red/black image on the first page of this thread.
HARDWARE
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
Processor: 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
OS Version: 10.4.11
Any other info I can provide? I'd love to start using BOXEE but this makes it a dealbreaker until fixed.
The rest of the app looks awesome though. :)

All local content so far as well as the single Internet video I tried, which was a diggnation video, is exhibiting this problem.
The static Snapshot shown when browsing the individual video is showing a properly coloured video.
And yes I already tried the OS X version of the advancedsettings hack already.
Any ideas?
Did the other people with this problem ever solve it?

Excellent. Glad to hear it. I have a Mac Mini arriving this afternoon so will give it a go on there as well. Hopefully it won't exhibit the same problem.
If you need any other information from me let me know. I'm anxious to use this media center on the machine with the problem.

Same issues as the rest, OS 10.4, MBP, here's the system display info:
XML hack - no effect.
SOME content plays fine - but nothing locally stored. Youtube simply does not play. Hulu comes up with the reddish purple mask.
I don't know where Boxee is located, if you're in Manhattan, I'll be happy to bring this Macbook over so you can use it and see what's going on.

UPDATE: Got it to work!
Changed glrectanglehack to 1 (instead of yes)
Followed the suggestion of changing the rendermethod to 1 from this message.

Just wanted to add my name to the list encountering this issue. I get a bluish-purple-y overlay.
I have added the advancedsettings.xml file with glrectanglehack to my Library path.
Thanks!

This method finally worked for me too. I had the same problem with Boxee and XBMC initially. But the standard XBMC had a menu option to change the Render Method to Basic Shaders (ARB). This solved the overlay problem in XBMC. Maybe Boxee needs this configuration option?

I get the same greenish images as shown on the first page of this thread. I tried the above fix of adding the file to the specified path. It did not work. Same issue when I tried XMBC last week. It happens on all video I have tried, local, trailers, hulu, etc.

I just downloaded and started using Boxee this week. I was seeing some video sources fine and some with the heavy blue/purple/red overlay.
Based on the above posts:
First, I tried the glrectanglehack fix with a setting of "1". - no change
Second, I tried changing the the Rendermethod setting in the guisettings.xml file to "1" (I didn't have to add the line, just change the setting from "0" to "1") - EVERYTHING NOW LOOKS FINE
So I went back and deleted the advancedsettings.xml file I created for the glrectanglehack fix and everything still works fine. Just to double-check I went back and set the rendermethod back to "0" and got the blue overlay again.
Examples of sources that showed the overlay (all work fine now):
Local files, Youtube, CNN, Apple Movie Trailers, On Networks and an RSS feed I set up: CNN Now in the News
Examples of sources that were always fine:
Hulu, CBS, MTV, Joost, WB
My system:
Macbook Pro, 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2006 model)
OSX 10.4.11
Radeon X1600

I'm running boxee on Ubuntu 8.10 with an Nvidia 8400gs and I have this problem also--strange thing is that I didn't until yesterday. I tried the advcancedsettings.xml hack(s) but no dice.
