View Full Version : Watched Flags

Hi there,
Been using Boxee for a couple of days now and for an alpha it's amazingly stable. So good job!! (only real issue i'm currently having is rtorrent not moving completed files from the .tmp folder to the download folder, but i'm looking into that.)
Anywaaaaay.. here is my vote for a feature I'm really missing: Watched flags..
with all these TV series on my hard drive and new ones being added daily, it kinda becomes hard figuring out which ones I've seen and which ones I haven't. Would be really cool to have an "unwatched" option in the Filters in video, would make picking something to watch way easier.
Again: GREAT job on boxee

Would be neat indeed. Now I movie all my new stuff into a folder new and when watched I move it to the proper folder. With this flagging option there would be no need for all that. I'll keep my finges crossed for this one :)

FYI; XBMC (which Boxee is based upon) already support this, so should hopefully not be too hard to implement.

I think this would be a great idea.
I was using Plex before I got 'converted' to Boxee, and they had a feature in there that hid the synopsis for the TV episodes that hadn't been watched yet.
I think this would be a nice feature to have in Boxee too.

This is a feature that will actually prevent me from using Boxee as my primary media center app. I watch different shows at different times throughout the week, and it becomes near impossible to remember which season/episode I'm on in each series. Not to mention how much nicer it would be to navigate through a trimmed down list of only videos that I've not seen.
Thanks for taking our suggestions, and I hope to see this in the future.

Think this is one of the most wanted request! Please let this be in one of the next versions of boxee!

What would be great is if this flag could be linked to the Boxee account, so if I watch an episode, it will be marked as seen when using any computer where I have logged in to Boxee.

Just wanted to pitch in here and support the implementation of such a feature...! Being a TV show junkie, right now this is one of the things I miss most im Boxee...! ;)
Maybe you could even offer different options how this will be handled -- like either remove an episode after it's been watched or just fade the entry in the list...?! Or something similar...
EDIT: Maybe we could even take this a step further and include an option to actually delete watched episodes from the device...?! That would be pretty cool...!

what would the delete do ..remove it from the boxee list ? Not sure i would want that ..maybe i would like to watch something again a few weeks later etc..

Totally agreed.
We need badges! Similiar to iTunes.
Whenever a new episode gets added, a little badge, like the ones on the iPhone, should appear at the TV-Show, with the count, how many new items are in there.
This would totally make my day!

Well, if you want that, then don't delete it...!? It's just an option...! :)
So you would basically have the option to either flag an episode as watched (by flag I mean like a litle colour tag or fading the entr) or actually delete it -- and by 'delete' I mean physically remove it from the hard disk...!
Right now I watch a few episodes and then later check what I've seen and afterwards I FTP into the ATV to free up space by deleting whatever I don't want to keep...but having the possibility to do so directly from the Boxee GUI would be way more effective...
But then again, maybe that's just me...?! ;)

deletion of local files has been requested many times--including from me.

I think this would be incredibly useful. I often use the colored labels in Finder to keep track of what I'm watching. Something like that may work, or just a marker of some sort even.

I'm not sure how many people use a set up like mine, but basically I wouldn't store any files locally on my Apple TV (or even an HTPC if I had one). If I could, I would purchase an Apple TV with no hard drive.
Anyway, I agree that a feature like this should be implemented for TV Shows, as well as movies, because I already do something like this in the way I organize my files. Personally, I think there should be a way to show that a movie has been watched in the metadata, but right now I have a folder for my movies and a folder for my seen movies.

I fully agree. The two features that hurts the most to leave XBMC is the watched filtering option.
The downside to leaving MyMovies under WinMC is the shared databasing across multiple headends.

I would love to see the addition that would allow boxee to display watched/unwatched flags on for individual videos.
Also, as someone else suggested, another great addition would be to add iPhone-type badges to folders/categories to show how many unwatched videos are inside.
And, it would even be helpful to have an "unwatched" category on the welcome screen (kind of like a smart list) that would pull in all of our unwatched videos.

In XMBC, besides having a filtered version where you only see the ones you didn't watch, it puts a white checkmark in the video thumbnail of the ones you did watch when seeing the non filtered version. This is not so easy to see, maybe it would be better to have different colors for the episode name in the list or maybe a visible icon.
Although the filter solves most of the issue, it's nice to see everything you have with a clean visual indication in that list of which ones you've already watched and which you didn't.
Just my two cents.

Essentially, some kind of new or watched flag is a necessary element for Boxee to be my primary media player. My memory is too crap to remember which episode of which show (of the many) I am currently watching.
It seems like this would meld well with Boxee's social tracking of what each person has recently watched. Hopefully this feature could be implemented in such a way that it would tag internet shows as well as local media. Again, given that Boxee is already tracking what I've watched this seems like it would be a completely relevant feature.
Here's to an update with this feature so I can start using Boxee as my primary media player.

Looks like this is a common request, but let me add my support for this as well. I've just started using Boxee (been using Plex for quite a while) and it will be very difficult to keep track of what episodes still need watching, especially with TED automatically adding more every day.
thanks

Yup, I have a similar problem. I watch 18 tv shows :D haha
There's no way to find out which ones I've already watched.

Well, I'm following about twice as many (yeah, I'm weird that way) and currently at the end of the day I actually manually remove the stuff that I've watched to avoid confusion...
Not the most elegant solution...

Have to say this is something that is almost a requirement. I've just started using Boxee in the past week (absolutely amazing, especially for alpha) and I really miss this simple feature from the MCE+MyMovies setup I had before.

Would love it if Boxee implemented a "watched" tag or some kind of colour coding. In the finder I use colour labels for shows I watch, (blue I've watched, red my mates watched and purple for both watched) if Boxee would colour tag shows I had watched then it would be really useful. Currently I have to manually add tags to shows after watching them in Boxee.
The more ways to tag, label and organize media the better. Having tags and labels could lead on to other things such as smart playlists etc.

+1 for the flag and + 1 for the option of deleting movies/tvshows watched (maybe ask user at the end of the movie/tv show if he wants to delete that file? and the answer for this question could be set to default "ask" or "yes" or "no" inside the settings for movies/tv...)

I'd like to suggest a refinement of this idea. Instead of just a watched and/or unwatched(new) flag, how about something like iphone (and I think aTV) has that has a flag (solid dot) for new and un-flagged for viewed/listened to. But additionally, it has a half dot to show partially viewed/heard file.

how about a "last watched" column, showing things like "last week" "last month" or "never"?

it could be integrated with the recently added listing, to show videos that are new but unwatched

Any updates to this feature? This is one thing I really loved about XBMC, it just made it super easy to (re)watch a show and know exactly what episode I left off on.

What's the fastest way to mark a show as watched?
Currently I'm selecting the episode and navigating to the mark as watched icon and going back to the episode list. Using the Boxee Remote app on my ipod touch that's 7 clicks. I use Boxee on 3 different machines, marking all the episodes as watched on the other two machines has become rather time consuming.
Is there a better way?

I agree. There should at lest be a way to mark a whole show or season as watched at once.

Agreed, it would be helpful to mark entire shows as unwatched. We marathon whole seasons of shows in my house, and we eventually run through shows several times. On the first run-through, the watched flags would match our activity perfectly. However, on the second run-through, all episodes would be marked as watched.

To be clear, I agreed with the OP who was talking about badges on the TV shows themselves showing unwatched or "new" episodes available. A great case study for this is how Apple TV handles this.
Two big features would make the My TV Shows feature a billion times better:
1. Little icons on the Thumbnail view posters that signify (at least) that SOMETHING is available to watch, maybe a number or + if it's over a single digit.
2. A way to mark an entire show as watched, or a quicker way to mark specific episodes as watched/unwatched, or ideally both. And seasons too.

I'm thinking about moving over from Media Portal which has an excellent tv shows plug-in.
This plug-in has a filter by un-watched.
This filter not only hides the watched items with in the tv shows "folder" but also hides the top level "folder" if the show has no new item or unwatched episodes.
I think that this is a killer feature allowing you to VERY quickly see if you have new episodes to watch as and when they come down.
If I do move over to boxee this feature would be sadly missed and would be great to see this feature in the filter

I would like to see the "watched" filter added to the TV Shows display as it exists in the Movies display.
Also, a little icon would be nice too... but the Bold/Not Bold seems to be ok.
I think that Boxee folks consider the que the place to find unwatched stuff. If this is the case... would it be possible to queue/dequeue at the show/season level rather than just episode level too?
