I have 1.2 firmware on the Boxee Box, and the app on my iPad.
I don't own a Appletv puck thing, do I need one for the Airplay icon to show up?
I have used Airplay on a setup at work, so I know that if the ipad sees an airplay device the icon shows up.
Do I have to turn something on to get the ipad to show the airplay icon for boxee? do I need a appletv puck as well?

Enable the AirPlay option on the Boxee Box (Network>>Servers I think?) It's been posted where precisely already.

Once you enable it in boxee anything that is airplay enabled on your ipad will just pop up with a new icon.

Access what files on the Boxee Box from where? You mean access files on the USB drive connected to the Boxee Box form the iPad app? That's not an AirPlay feature, that's a Boxee Media Manager feature.
You have to install BMM on a computer, map the Boxee Box drive on that computer and then add that mapped drive to BMM.
Then the Boxee Box media files will show up under My Media.

Airplay isn't for accessing files on the boxee box. Its for watching things on your ipod on your tv.
So you have a movie on your ios device, you can show the movie on your tv, or you are watching youtube or using the cnn app on your ios device, that video can be put up onto the tv via the boxee box.

I done this and it works wirelessly after I change a ton of settings on my iPhone and boxee box (apparently and issue with DNS address). when Im wired it will not function at all. should it be able to? Id love to you this feature but wired is a must. I hate buffering and wired seems to cut that down on most things.

Yes, it should work wired or wireless -- they're both just devices on the your local network and should be able to communicate with one another BUT they do both have to be on the same network (both devices should have the same three set of starting digits for their ip adress, e.g. 192.168.1.xxx)
If you want to post your network settings from both the Boxee Box (Settings>>Network) and from your iPhone, we can probably get you sorted out.
