View Full Version : Exact system requirements for BMM on a Mac?

I'm asking because I cannot install the BMM on my macbook with an intel core duo and running snow leopard and on my mac mini intel core duo running snow leopard as well.
But it is running on my imac with an intel core 2 duo running lion. But the system requirements say nothing about 32 or 64 bit and I have 10.5+ installed on all machines

http://support.boxee.tv/forums/20197797-boxee-media-manager says 10.5 and above should work... if not, file a bug or contact support (see below).

@MistaG it should work on 10.6 ..can you elaborate on the issue you are having? Problem installing ? running?

Ok I submitted the issue, I also updated the OS on the macbook and now I'm running 10.6.8 and still the same issue, here's the screenshot when I try to to drag the app to the application folder.
http://d.pr/DUt0
I CAN drag it to the folder but when I try to run it, I get system pop up saying "you cannot open the application BMM because it's not supported by this type of Mac computer"
for me it seems like a 32bit/64bit issue because it runs on the imac

you have admin rights on the machine?
marcel
August 9th, 2011, 12:57 PM
what mac is it? Macbook? Macbook pro?
MistaG
August 9th, 2011, 12:58 PM
yes I'm the admin on all the machines, the difference is that on the macbook and mac mini I'm the only user while the imac has a second user (but still, I'm the admin and installed it on all machines as admin)

please also try deleting the BMM application and then reboot the mac and try again and see if this helps

Done that but no difference
I'm kinda surprised or shocked that it seems that I'm the only one (so far?) with that problem

I have a PPC G4 Mac Mini (2004) running 10.5.8, it has the white circle with slash on the icon meaning it can't be installed. see the screenshot posted by MistaG. I was able to run it on my iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo late 2007 running Mac OS X 10.6.8. so you need a specific system requirement… saying 10.5+ on WHAT processors :)

yes you are correct it needs to be intel ..and MistaG has intel..

MistaG posted a screenshot showing the white circle with slash meaning it can't be used on this such Mac even though it is running above 10.5+

I have this exact same issue.
Mac Mini Core Duo 1.83Ghz with 1Gb RAM
OS X 10.6.8
Running as admin but with other accounts on the machine.
The Mac Mini has "normal" Boxee installed as well - will that make a difference?
App installs OK but with the white 'no entry' logo over the icon.
Running the app gives exactly the same message as the OP:- "You can't open the application Boxee Media Manager because it is not supported on this type of Mac."
Common theme so far seems to be Core Duo processors...

Same here, Show Leopard iMac with Core Duo (note: NOT Core 2 Duo) CPU. The cpu does not support Intel's new 64-bit architecture.

Glad finally others have the same issue, I thought I was having some wierd mac problems myself. But it really seems to be an issue of CPU, only Intel Core Duo (32Bit) seem to be affected by this

The BMM application is 64bit so will not run on 32 bit machines

Can the BMM be updated to work on 32-bit as well? Can there be a fix or forget about it?

Same problem here on an Intel Core Duo Mac Mini running 10.6.8. Any update to this issue? Is Core Duo not ever going to work? If that's the issue, it would be nice if you update your system requirements as it was a pretty frustrating experience trying to figure out why I couldn't run it.

I submitted a helpdesk ticket, and just received the following:-
Sorry but the Boxee Media Manager requires a 64bit system, meaning it most likely won't work on older computers. Please check the support of your CPU.
We may add a new version in the future that will support it.
Kosta.
That's fine, but at least put that info in your "Minimum Specs"! It's all about managing expectations...

Well, that saves me a lot of time trying to move from Plex to Boxee on my Mac Mini....
I guess i will have to stick with Plex for a while longer....

January 28th, and you haven't yet bothered mentioning this in the requirements? Or changed it so it doesn't install on architecture is can't run on? Or at least doesn't overwrite the existing version? Luckily someone posted a link to the previous version of boxee elsewhere on this forum http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/31774/boxee as I've just broken my only way of watching TV: we don't have an aerial or set-top box.
Surely my scenario is common: old mac, retired as no longer suitable for daily use, finds new life plugged into my television?
Re-installing the old version, and taking a look at Plex at the same time.
