View Full Version : Screen goes to black

My download and installation of Boxee "seemed" to go well - until I attempted to run it. My screen went black and NOTHING further happened. Could my video interface not have enough oomph? The computer is running Ubuntu Hardy Heron and all other applications (with one exception) run as expected. The one deficiency I've noticed is that, in spite of "apparently" having enough video memory, Google Earth will not display properly: Earth shows up only as a halo. Any one else have this or similar problem?

Marcel, thanks for coming to my aid. Following the suggestion to display the contents of an "xbmc.log" file yielded nothing - there was no "xbmc.log" file on my computer. Could it be that Boxee had not run properly or long enough to create the log file? When I tried running Boxee and got a black screen, I "switched" (CTRL-Tab) windows and got frame with Boxee across the top but all else black.
The second suggestion about installing Envy, although I'm pleased with the graphics results, did not make running Boxee possible (but then, Envy did not make Google Earth display properly, either).
It may just be best for me to wait until Boxee is in Beta. Do you have other suggestions?

Hi,
I'm using an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu-netbook-remix. Sometimes the screen goes black, sometimes appears some boxee icon and the central icon "Add new user", but I can't use the mouse or the keyboard everything is blocked. The intel drivers seems to be up to date and work well, I've checked the gpl and everything is ok!!!
The unique solution to take the netbook control is to force the shutdown!!!
HELP ME!!! ;-)

Marcel, here's the info on my video setup.
nVIDIA Model: GeForce4MX Integrated GPU
Card Type: AGP 4x
Video RAM: 64 MB
GPU Freq: 199 Mhz
nVIDIA Driver Version: 96.43.05
All this came from SysInfo.
Next, I'll try creating the log per the URL you sent.
Thanks again.

Hi george3095
the GeForce4MX is not supported. our minimal requirements include an opengl 1.4 compatible card. according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units, your card is an opengl 1.2.
sorry about that ....:(
